In a world full of fast fashion and disposable trends, Gayatri Varun is quietly changing the game. On FoundHer, the founder and CEO of Green Hermitage opened up about how she built one of India’s most exciting sustainable luxury brands—one that’s run by women, supports local artisans, and uses plant-based materials to make eco-conscious statement pieces.
From A Broken Bag To A Big Idea
Gayatri’s journey began with a frustrating moment. “I was sitting in the metro and the handle of my bag, made from plastic, snapped mid-ride,” she said. When she went looking for a better, planet-friendly option, she found there weren’t many—especially not stylish or formal ones. “That’s when I realised there are no sustainable options if I have to buy a slightly formal bag for myself.”
Her search led her to plant-based vegan leather, and that changed everything.
Building Green Hermitage From Scratch
With no background in design, Gayatri relied on her experience as a consumer. “I haven’t even seen the inside of a design school,” she laughed on the podcast. “But I’ve been carrying bags for the last 10–15 years and I know what works in terms of utility.”

She hired talented designers and worked with them to craft beautiful, functional products using materials like apple leather, cactus leather, and coconut leather. It wasn’t easy. “The first time I started working with plant leather, the artists didn’t know how to stitch it. It took us three months.”
Leading With Purpose
Gayatri explained how Green Hermitage is more than just a fashion label. With 80% of its team made up of women, the brand is empowering local communities while also promoting slow, sustainable fashion.
She wants people to make smarter choices. “I wanted to create a brand where people purchase a product, and for the next five to ten years, you can carry it comfortably with any outfit,” she shared.
Busting The Myth: Sustainability Isn’t Always Expensive
One big myth she wants to break? That eco-friendly fashion costs too much. “People tell us, ‘Your stuff is great but too expensive.’ But a ₹2,000 plastic wallet might chip and peel in two years. Our plant leather wallets last much longer—five to ten years.”

Recognition And What Lies Ahead
Gayatri’s work has not gone unnoticed. She was recently honoured with the ‘Sustainable Brand of the Year’ at the Womenpreneur Awards 2025. “It was very unexpected,” she said. “But I think that award just went on to endorse that we’re on the right path.”
Gayatri Varun’s story is proof that a small, thoughtful idea—combined with determination—can grow into something powerful. Through Green Hermitage, she’s not only offering a better way to shop but also encouraging us to rethink what luxury really means.
