Disha Naik From Goa Becomes India's First Female Airport Firefighter

Disha Naik from Goa’s Mopa region becomes India’s first female recruit in the Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) unit. Naik had started her initial training at Manohar International Airport.

A woman from Goa, Disha Naik has made history by becoming India’s first ever female firefighter at an Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) unit. Disha Govind Naik broke gender barriers by becoming the first woman to be certified to operate a crash fire tender. Naik has been deployed at the Manohar International Airport at Mopa Village in Goa since July 2022. This made her the first certified female firefighter from the state.

Disha Naik’s journey is commendable and a testament to her determination and training. In November 2021, Disha Naik applied for a position in the Airport Rescue And Firefighting Department at MIA. Her persistent work and dedication towards successfully meeting all the prerequisites brought her to the eventuality of being certified as the first certified female firefighter from Goa on July 1, 2022.

It was shortly after her joining the airport, she mentioned her interest in operating the crash fire tender (CFT) that was specifically designed for aircraft rescue and firefighting. She went through a six-month intensive training in the state of Tamil Nadu. This equipped her with the requisite training, essential skills and knowledge that is needed for the demanding role she will be serving as a crash fire tender operator.

Disha’s journey is much like that of her male counterparts; she has received no special treatment based on gender. Her hardwork and dedication were put to test while being evaluated by a special board of experts who assessed her driving and operational skills. In fact, it was Disha’s outstanding performance that resulted in her certification as India’s first ever female firefighter authorised to operate the crash fire tender.
