Cancer in individuals under 50 has been a growing concern in recent years. Various celebrities were diagnosed with cancer and fought and lost battles. This alarming trend underscores the importance of understanding the reasons behind this increase and the steps that can be taken for early detection and prevention. We spoke to Dr Ashish Gupta USA trained, American board-certified medical oncologist, Chief of Medical Oncology, at Unique Hospital Cancer Centre, Dwarka, Delhi regarding the same.
Dr Ashish said, “Traditionally, cancer has been associated with ageing, with the majority of cases occurring in people over 50. According to data by the National Library of Medicine indicates a shift, with a noticeable increase in cancer cases among younger individuals. This change is not attributed to a single factor but rather a combination of lifestyle, environmental, and possibly genetic components. As a medical oncologist, it's important to address the increasing cancer cases in people under 50.”
Here are some of the reasons which are leading to an increase in cancer and how you can take measures to prevent the same:
Lifestyle Change
Our lifestyle impacts our overall health and thus it is advisable to follow a healthy lifestyle to maintain health. However, the kind of lifestyle today’s generation is following is a major reason behind rising cancer. Obesity is a big health issue which is often ignored and can lead to further medical issues. Lack of physical activity and an unhealthy diet lead to obesity. Smoking and drinking are common in young people and this increases cancer risk.
Environmental Factors
We cannot deny the fact that environmental factors are also responsible for causing cancer. For instance, Delhi’s air pollution exposes people to cancer-causing substances. Moreover, some jobs involve exposure to dangerous chemicals which cause cancer.
Genetic And Family History
Some cancers (cervical cancer prevention) are inheritable which means they get inherited by the future generation. Thus, it is important to know the family history and take necessary measures to prevent cancer.
Early Detection
It is said about cancer (world cancer day 2024) that early detection can prevent it from being fatal. There are several tests available that detect cancer in the early stage. Tests like mammograms (starting at age 40 in females), colonoscopies (starting at age 45), Pap smears (starting at age 21 in females), oral cancer screening (in smokers or those who chew tobacco), PSA test (starting at age 45 in males) are important. If you have a family history of cancer, you are advised to get tested earlier.
