Uncombable Hair Syndrome: Everything You Need to Know

Are you having difficulties combing your kid's hair flat? It could be the result of Uncombable Hair Syndrome, a rare genetic condition. This condition causes the hair to look dry and frizzy, and stick out at all angles. The hair doesn't lie flat no matter how much you comb it. The problem usually starts in children between three months and 12 years of age.

It is also called spun glass hair, pili trianguli et canaliculi or cheveux incoiffables.

This condition, however, doesn't create any further complications.

According to Healthline, people with this condition usually have blonde and silver hair. It also looks wiry, frizzy, and dry, and stands away from the scalp. This happens because hair follicles build hair shafts with structural differences and a lack of melanin in the hair.

The condition generally starts showing in babies between three months and three years old.

Causes

According to a recent study, genes are believed to be responsible for this condition.

This condition first appeared in published articles in the 1970s. It is a rare condition and not much researched.

According to the Genetic and Rare Diseases Information Center, this syndrome generally develops through inherited autosomal recessive genetic mutations. It means the person with the syndrome received the genetic mutation from both biological parents. Parents are considered carriers of the condition, however, they may not suffer from the condition themselves.

Is It A Serious Condition?

In most cases, Uncombable Hair Syndrome does not lead to complications. However, it could be a symptom of more serious health concerns in some people, Healthline reported.

Treatment

In this condition, hair might seem unmanageable but it is still healthy. However, hair growth is slow. Officially, there is no treatment for UHS.

For most children, Uncombable Hair Syndrome is a harmless condition but it can be quite frustrating because it makes hair styling and caring for it difficult. Children generally outgrow this condition during their teenage years.

According to the National Institutes of Health, Scientists know of only about 100 cases of Uncombable Hair Syndrome by now.
