Menstruation myths have troubled mankind for ages and we get it because details around blood can make people feel shy. However, menstruation is an important part of a female's life. Though a lot of myths have been debunked because of social media awareness, menstrual sex is still taboo. Most people call it unsafe, infectious and whatnot, but do any of them hold true? We spoke to Dr Astha Dayal, Director OBS & Gynaecologist, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram to clear the clouds about menstrual sex.

Is Menstrual Sex Safe?

The first common question that comes to mind is the safety of menstrual sex. Addressing the query, Dr Astha Dayal said, “It is generally safe to have physical relations (sexual intercourse) during periods. Some women may experience increased sexual desire during their period due to hormonal changes. Though it usually is harmless, as gynaecologists we recommend using proper precautions during this time.”

Can Women Get Infections During Menstrual Sex?

A woman's immunity is generally low in periods and she is at a higher risk of catching infections. Also, blood is a good medium for infections to grow, so the chances of local infection increases. So, both partners must maintain good hygiene before and after sex to minimise the risk of infection. Washing the genital area with mild soap and water is usually sufficient. Also, using barrier protection (condoms) will help reduce the chances of sexually transmitted infections.

Can Sex During Menstruation Lead To Pregnancy?

One should also remember that while the risk of pregnancy is lower during menstruation, it is not zero. Sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days, so if a woman has a shorter menstrual cycle and ovulation soon after her period ends, there is a small chance of pregnancy. So contraception should still be used.

Is Menstrual Sex Cause Discomfort?

Some women may feel uncomfortable or experience discomfort due to menstrual cramps or heavy bleeding. It's essential to communicate openly with your partner about whether or not you feel comfortable engaging in sexual activity during your period.

Period pain could increase or decrease with sex. Some women experience more cramps that can make sex uncomfortable or painful. For others, orgasm during menstruation can help relieve cramps due to the release of endorphins, which act as natural painkillers.

Also, period sex can be messier than sex at other times due to the presence of menstrual blood. Couples could use a cervical cap or menstrual cup, which can reduce the flow of blood during intercourse.

Can A Man Get An Infection From Period Blood?

Menstrual blood itself is not harmful, but it can provide a medium for bacteria and pathogens to grow. Also, the cervix is slightly more open during menstruation which could make transmission of infections more common during periods. If either partner has an STI or a bacterial infection like bacterial vaginosis, there may be a higher chance of the other partner getting it during period sex.
