One-Day Menstrual Leave Announced By Odisha Govt

Today, i.e., Thursday, August 15, 2024, the Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha, Parvati Parida announced a one-day menstrual leave policy for women in all jobs in the state. She took the stage at a district-level Independence Day celebration in Cuttack to make the remarkable announcement, as per a report by Kalinga TV.

According to reports, the policy will be implemented immediately, allowing the women to take a day off on their first or second day of the menstrual cycle. Odisha is not the first state to introduce menstrual leave in India, however, it did recently join Bihar and Kerala in the list of states with a similar policy.

One Day Menstrual Leave Announced By Odisha Govt On Independence Day

However, the central government seems to have no such plans to allow paid menstrual leave as of July 2024. As per instructions given to the government by the Supreme Court in July 2024, it was asked to develop a model framework for a compulsory menstrual leave policy. However, Lok Sabha issued a written reply regarding this issue, Minister of Women and Child Development Annapurna Devi said, “At present, there is no proposal under consideration of the Government to make provision for paid menstrual leave mandatory for all workplaces.”
