Gout, joint pain, or sudden swelling in the big toe? These could be signs of high uric acid levels, a common lifestyle issue for many Indians today. But before you reach for medication, doctors suggest that some natural remedies and dietary changes might do the trick.
We spoke to Dr Niharika Mehta, Consultant Physician and Lifestyle Specialist at Apollo Spectra Hospital, Delhi, who says, “In many borderline cases of high uric acid, lifestyle and food choices can reverse the condition naturally. Medicines should only be considered when levels are persistently high or causing complications.”
7 Natural Ways to Lower Uric Acid Without Medicines
Stay Hydrated
Drinking 2.5 to 3 litres of water daily helps flush out excess uric acid through urine. Hydration supports kidney function and keeps uric acid levels in check.
Cut Down on Red Meat and Seafood
Purine-rich foods like mutton, organ meats, and shellfish can spike uric acid levels. Opt for lean protein sources like lentils or tofu instead.
Say No to Sugary Drinks and Alcohol
Fizzy drinks and beer are known triggers. “Fructose in sugary sodas and ethanol in alcohol both interfere with uric acid excretion,” Dr Mehta explains.

Load Up on Vitamin C
Fruits like oranges, amla, strawberries, and guava are rich in vitamin C, which helps lower uric acid naturally. Amla juice in the morning can be particularly helpful.
Eat More Fibre
Fibre-rich foods like oats, cucumbers, and carrots support digestion and help remove excess uric acid from the body.
Limit High-Fat Dairy Products
Switch to low-fat milk and yoghurt. High-fat dairy can worsen uric acid retention, while low-fat dairy has shown positive effects in studies.
Try Herbal Remedies Like Giloy and Tulsi
Ayurvedic herbs like giloy, tulsi, and triphala are known for their anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. However, always consult a doctor before starting any herbal remedy.
If you experience severe joint pain, swelling, or recurring gout attacks, it's time to get your uric acid levels tested. While these natural tips help manage borderline cases, medical treatment may be necessary in more serious conditions.
Managing uric acid doesn’t always mean popping pills. As Dr Mehta says, “Most lifestyle-related conditions can be prevented or reversed with consistent healthy habits. Uric acid is no different.” So, before reaching for medication, try reaching for a glass of water, a bowl of fruits, or a walk in the park.
