With the arrival of scorching summer heat, it's important to talk about one of the most common seasonal infections, Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). While UTIs can affect men, women, and children, women are four times more likely to experience them. Most UTIs are not severe and can be treated with medication, but the risk increases during summer due to heat and humidity, which create an ideal environment for bacterial growth. Dehydration further adds to the problem, as lower water intake can increase susceptibility to infections.
To understand why UTIs are more common in summer and how to prevent them, we spoke to Dr Sarika Pandya, Consultant Urologist at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology, Hyderabad, who shared expert insights on the topic.
Why Are UTIs More Common In Summer?
Dr Sarika Pandya explains the key reasons behind the increased risk of urinary tract infections during hot weather:
1. Dehydration
Dehydration is more prevalent in summer, especially for those who spend long hours outdoors. Staying hydrated is essential for flushing out harmful bacteria from the urinary tract. When fluid intake is low, bacteria can accumulate, significantly increasing the risk of a UTI.
2. Warmer Temperatures
Studies have shown a direct link between rising temperatures and an increase in UTI cases. Research indicates that when outdoor temperatures hit 80°F (27°C) or higher, UTI cases rise by 15%. Warm and humid conditions create an ideal environment for bacterial growth, making infections more common during summer.
3. Moisture and Damp Clothing
Summer activities often involve swimming in pools, lakes, or beaches. However, staying in wet swimsuits or damp undergarments for extended periods can encourage bacterial growth. The moisture creates a breeding ground for bacteria, increasing the likelihood of developing a UTI.

6 Ways To Prevent A Urinary Tract Infection
Dr Sarika Pandya shares essential tips to reduce the risk of UTIs during hot weather:
1. Stay Hydrated
One of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent UTIs is by drinking plenty of fluids. Proper hydration dilutes urine and ensures frequent urination, which helps flush out bacteria from the urinary tract. Ideally, aim for two litres of water per day, increasing to two and a half litres in summer to compensate for fluid loss.
2. Don’t Hold Your Bladder
Delaying urination allows bacteria to sit and multiply in the bladder, increasing the risk of infection. To reduce your chances of developing a UTI, avoid holding in urine for extended periods—listen to your body and use the restroom when needed.
3. Wipe from Front to Back
Proper hygiene is key to preventing bacteria from spreading. Since women have a shorter urethra, bacteria can travel to the bladder more easily. Always wipe from front to back after using the restroom to reduce the risk of bacteria from the anal area reaching the urethra.
4. Avoid Tight or Wet Clothing
Sweating and water-related activities are common in summer, but damp undergarments and swimwear can encourage bacterial growth. To prevent infections, change out of wet swimsuits and sweaty clothes as soon as possible and opt for breathable cotton underwear.
5. Urinate After Intercourse
Sexual activity can introduce bacteria into the urinary tract, increasing the risk of UTIs. To help flush out any harmful bacteria, always urinate immediately after intercourse—especially during hot and humid weather when bacteria multiply faster.

6. Reconsider Your Birth Control or Feminine Hygiene Products
Certain contraceptives, such as diaphragms and spermicide-treated condoms, may irritate the urinary tract and promote bacterial growth. Similarly, douches, powders, and deodorant sprays can disrupt the natural balance of the vaginal area, increasing UTI risk. Consult a healthcare professional to choose the best birth control and hygiene products for your body.
