Menopause significantly impacts the overall well-being of a woman. From hormonal imbalance to pain and mood swings, a woman goes through a lot of challenges during this period. Menopause can also significantly affect oral health due to hormonal changes and associated conditions. We spoke to Dr Sacheev Nanda, Chief Dental Surgeon, (M.D.S) Prosthodontist, Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune to understand how oral health can be impacted by menopause.
Dr Sacheev Nanda said that hormonal changes such as a decline in estrogen during menopause can lead to dry mouth (Xerostomia), a condition when reduced saliva production increases the risk of cavities, gum disease, and discomfort. Additionally, it leads to gum issues such as inflammation, sensitivity, or gingivitis. These hormonal changes alter the taste and can make certain foods less appealing, potentially affecting nutrition.
Dr Nanda also highlighted that menopause can lead to bone density loss. He explained that lower estrogen levels can cause a reduction in bone density, which may weaken the jawbone, increasing the likelihood of tooth loss or loosening.
Here are a few proactive measures you can follow to combat oral health issues:
Dr Nanda recommends visiting dentists at least twice a year for professional cleanings and early detection of issues.
Dr Nanda suggests drinking plenty of water and considering saliva substitutes or mouth rinses to address dry mouth.
According to Dr Nanda, brush with fluoride toothpaste twice daily and floss regularly to prevent cavities and gum disease.
Dr Nanda recommends prioritising a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D to support bone health and overall well-being.
Dr Nanda suggests using a humidifier, particularly at night, can alleviate dry mouth symptoms and improve comfort.
