World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year between August 1 to 7 to spread awareness and normalise breastfeeding. Even though breastfeeding is one of the most natural processes to exist that nourish an infant and cater to the strengthening of the bond between a mother and baby, it is often looked down upon. This results in immense guilt and shame for the mother. To avoid this situation, one must empower the breastfeeding mother to feed her child whether in private or public.
To know more about this situation and how to create a nurturing environment for breastfeeding mothers, we spoke to Dr Nishant Bansal, Consultant - Pediatrician & Neonatologist at Motherhood Hospitals, Noida. He suggested how fathers, family members, and the workplace can improve the situation.
How Fathers Can Step In To Support Breastfeeding
Fathers can play the most pivotal role in supporting a breastfeeding mother. “They can take on the nighttime feedings, bottle-feeding expressed milk, allowing mothers to get the rest they desperately need,” says Dr Bansal. Acknowledging the mother's efforts and reminding her of the benefits of breastfeeding can be supportive. A father’s support is bigger than anyone else’s to strengthen the family bond.
Role Of Families In Breastfeeding
Other family members including in-laws, siblings, and extended family also play an equally vital role in supporting a breastfeeding mother. “In my practice, I've witnessed the impact of family members who step in to help with household chores or childcare. This not only gives mothers the time and space to focus on breastfeeding but also reassures them that they are not alone in this journey,” says Dr Bansal.

How Can Workplace Support Breastfeeding Mothers?
Employers play a significant role in supporting a mother's ability to breastfeed. “Providing private, comfortable spaces for expressing milk and allowing flexible breaks can be essential. When employers show that they value their employees' roles as mothers, it fosters loyalty and increases job satisfaction,” suggests Dr Bansal. Further, policies like extended maternity leave and remote working encourage breastfeeding mothers.
Overcoming the guilt of vacating time and postponing household or professional chores to breastfeed a baby is essential, however, it is impossible without the family and employer’s help. A child’s nutritional needs must be met as much as a mother must get appropriate support and encouragement to breastfeed.
