Sexual Wellness: Every year, we celebrate World Sexual Health on September 4. This year is no different. This day is all about spreading awareness around sex, intimacy, and sexuality which are integral parts of our lives.
With orgasm disparity in the world, we thought to bring you facts regarding the importance of sex for women. While our society considers it the need for men, the subject has always remained a taboo when it comes to women.
According to a report published by Durex India, only 65% of women in a heterosexual relationship have reported experiencing orgasm. This shows how little importance women get when it comes to intimacy.
We spoke to Dr Anita Shyam (MBBS and MD), sexologist and psychiatrist at Qurex, to understand why it is important for women to have sex.
Sexual Health Day 2023 Theme
The theme of Sexual Health Day 2023 is consent. Dr Shyam said, “Consent is a crucial aspect of any intimate relationship and every individual has the right to control what happens to their own body. Seeking and respecting consent means recognising and valuing individual autonomy.”
She also added, “Lack of consent can lead to significant emotional and psychological trauma and increase the risk of potential health concerns.”
Importance Of Sex For Women
While speaking about the importance of sex for women, Dr Shyam listed a few advantages.
Emotional Well-being And Connection: The sexologist shared that sexual activity can trigger feel-good hormones like endorphins and oxytocin that boost emotional well-being. It also promotes emotional closeness and strengthens the bond between partners. She also added that extended periods of sexual problems can lead to emotional and psychological issues.
Relationship Satisfaction: The expert said that sex helps to maintain a healthy level of intimacy (Are Sex And Intimacy Same) in a romantic relationship. “Sexual problems and dissatisfaction can cause strain in the relationship.”
Vaginal Health: Dr Shyam said that continuous sexual activity can help to maintain vaginal health because it leads to improved blood flow, enhances the suppleness of the vaginal tissue, and encourages natural lubrication. In the absence of stimulation of the vagina, women might experience discomfort, vaginal dryness, and even pain during sexual intercourse.
Physical Well-being: The doctor said that regular sexual activity helps with pain relief, improves cardiovascular health, and enhances the quality of sleep. If a woman is experiencing any sexual dysfunctions, it can hamper her physical health.
Hormonal Balance: Dr Shyam said that sexual satisfaction helps to maintain hormonal balance among women. It reduces the symptoms of menstrual issues, including mood swings and cramps, and keeps the cycle regular.
Self-Esteem: The psychiatrist added that a fulfilling sex life can give a boost to a woman’s self-esteem. It can help her with struggles of body image issues and boost her self-assurance across various facets of life.
