According to the Indian Meteorological Department, Delhi recorded the highest temperature of 52.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday 29 May 2024 leading to heatwaves and heat strokes in several parts of the city. Dr Loveleena Nadir said, “Rising temperatures have a detrimental effect on the physical, mental, and reproductive health and adversely affect fertility. Heat stress can disrupt the hormonal balance leading to irregular menstrual cycles and fertility issues.

Impact Of Heat Waves On Women’s Fertility

Irregular Periods, Damaged Eggs and Pregnancy Complications are some of the major impacts of heat waves on female reproductive health. “Studies have shown that exposure to higher ambient temperatures can accelerate ovarian ageing and hurt ovarian reserve," said Dr Loveleena.

“Moreover, exposure to high temperatures can lower sperm production and result in altered sperm morphology resulting in infertility,” added Doctor Loveleena.

How To Protect Reproductive Health From Heat Waves?

Here are the tips that will protect your reproductive health in heat (what is eye stroke) waves:

  • The first thing is to keep your body hydrated. So, ensure to drink plenty of fluids such as fruit juice and coconut water.
  • Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours as it can lead to heat stroke.

  • Avoid hot tubs and saunas as they can raise your body temperature and affect your fertility.
  • Eat a healthy diet as it regulates your body temperature and boosts your fertility.
