In Indian households, fitkari or alum is the unsung ingredient of kitchen and bathroom that is often overlooked. However, this natural compound has been used for centuries in Ayurveda and traditional wellness practices.
We spoke to Dr Anjali Mehta, a Delhi-based Ayurvedic Practitioner and Wellness Consultant, to understand the science and simplicity behind this age-old remedy.
“Alum is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and completely natural,” Dr Mehta says. “It’s something our grandmothers used regularly, and we’re now rediscovering how useful it can be in modern life.”
Alum’s natural astringent properties help dry out pimples and reduce acne-causing bacteria. Just wet a small alum block, rub gently on clean skin, and rinse off.
Whether it's a shaving nick or a small kitchen cut, rubbing a wet piece of fitkari can stop bleeding and prevent infection thanks to its antiseptic properties.
Alum blocks sweat and kills odour-causing bacteria. Rub a moistened alum stone under your arms post-shower; it’s chemical-free and gentle on skin.
Mix a pinch of powdered alum in warm water and use it as a mouth rinse. It helps reduce pain and speeds upthe healing of ulcers.

Before modern filters, fitkari was a go-to method to clear dirty water. Adding a small amount to murky water helps settle impurities and makes it clearer and safer to drink (boiling is still recommended).
Used in traditional facials, alum helps tighten the skin and reduce fine lines. A mild alum toner can be made by dissolving a bit of alum in rose water.
Soaking your feet in warm water with crushed alum can help fight foot odour, infections, and even athlete’s foot, thanks to its antifungal properties.
Dr Mehta advises, “Use alum externally and in small quantities. It’s not meant for long-term or internal use without expert supervision.”
Alum is cheap, easy to use, and incredibly effective. Whether it’s skincare, personal hygiene, or first-aid, fitkari is a hidden gem in your home that deserves more attention.
