Alum, also known as Fitkari, is a crystal-like mineral with various uses, from traditional medicine to skincare. Known for its skin-tightening and oil-controlling properties, it’s often used to rejuvenate and brighten the skin. We spoke to Dr. Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist at The Esthetic Clinics, as she shared how to safely incorporate Fitkari for glowing skin.
What Is Alum Fitkari?
Alum, or Fitkari, is a natural mineral that looks like a translucent crystal. It’s widely known for its astringent properties, which help tighten the skin, control oil, and reduce inflammation. According to Dr Kapoor, “Alum can be a simple yet effective addition to skincare routines, but one should always perform a patch test to prevent potential irritation.”
5 Ways To Use Alum Stone For Glowing Skin
Here are five ways to use alum fitkari for your face:
1. Natural Toner
Fitkari can act as a natural toner, helping to tighten pores and improve skin texture. Dr. Kapoor explains, “A simple alum toner can help balance oil levels and add firmness to the skin.” To make an alum toner, dissolve a small amount of alum powder in water. Apply it using a cotton pad or spray bottle, gently patting it onto your face. It’s essential to avoid overuse, as alum can be drying.
2. For Dandruff Treatment
Alum’s benefits aren’t limited to the face; it can also be used on the scalp to help with dandruff. Dr. Kapoor mentions, “Rinsing with alum water after shampooing can reduce dandruff and support scalp health.” Dissolve alum powder in water, apply it to the scalp after shampooing, leave it on for a few minutes, and rinse thoroughly. This treatment helps with dandruff control and may improve scalp condition over time.
3. Acne Spot Treatment
For those dealing with acne, alum can offer relief when applied directly to problem areas. Dr. Kapoor notes, “Alum’s anti-inflammatory properties make it effective for spot treatment on acne.” Create a paste by mixing alum powder with a few drops of water. Apply it to acne spots and leave it on for about 10–15 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Using this spot treatment a few times a week can help calm inflammation and reduce acne.
4. Firming Face Mask
Using Fitkari as a face mask can help improve skin firmness and texture. Dr Kapoor suggests, “A DIY alum mask with honey or yoghurt can be refreshing for the skin.” To make this mask, mix powdered alum with honey or yoghurt for a smooth consistency. Apply it evenly over the face, avoiding sensitive areas such as the eyes. Allow the mask to dry naturally before rinsing with lukewarm water. This treatment can tighten and soften the skin, making it feel rejuvenated.

5. Exfoliating Scrub
Alum can also be used as a gentle exfoliating scrub to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores. Dr Kapoor advises, “Using alum as an exfoliant once a month can be beneficial, but overuse can lead to irritation.” To create an exfoliating scrub, mix alum powder with sugar to form a thick paste. Gently massage it onto your face for a few minutes, then rinse with warm water. This scrub can help brighten and smooth the skin, but it’s important to use it sparingly.
