Pregnancy is a result of efforts by a man and a woman both but most methods of contraception focus on the women only. As per recent research a male pill could be developed to change that! Birth control methods for women are many ranging from pills to surgical procedures. Many women take these up with or without their consent. Condoms are quite popular but the notion that they reduce pleasure leads to many men pressurising women to opt for contraceptive pills and more. When it comes to men, the options are pretty limited right now because apart from condoms, all they can do is practice the withdrawal or pulling out method, have outercourse, apply a spermicide or go for vasectomy. But a recent research aims to bring forth birth control pills for men. (you’re thinking yayyyyy, No more Mala D or iPill!) Okay, hold your horses. Scientists have claimed that they have created a new anti-contraceptive pill for men, which is very effective and safe too. Now men can also succeed in contraception by having a pill every day as this pill is similar to the contraceptive pill used by women.

The Research On Male Contraceptive Pills

The University of Washington and the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LA Biomed) tested the medication Dimethandrolone on 30 men aged 18 to 50 in the duration of 1 month. Men took a pill daily with a meal for one month and the pill caused a significant drop in levels of essential hormones such as serum T, LH, and FSH. There were no serious adverse events. However, side-effects of medication included headache, fatigue, acne etc. But the good thing about this medicine is that it does not reduce the libido of men.

Stefani Page of Professor of Medicine and Co-Senior University of Washington, Seattle said: "The goal of making it is to expand the contraceptive options and make a menu of choices for men as we have for women. We are currently ignoring a major potential user population with limited options available to men."

"Our results show that this tablet, which combines two hormonal activities in one, will reduce the production of sperm while protecting libido," researcher Christina Wang said. However, before you think that this pill will be available right away at your neighbourhood chemist shop listen to this. Christina said that the compound needs more testing before making it available to the public. "Safe, reversible hormonal male contraceptive should be available in approximately 10 years," he said.

Christina said, "This tablet has increased interest in contraception among couples," when it comes to reversible contraception, men actually have limited options. When we ask men about hormonal compounds, then about 50% are ready to try this new method. And when you asked the question from their partner, the percentage increased even more. "

However, in 2011 a separate study by the Anglia Ruskin University of the United Kingdom found that 70 out of the 134 women worry that their male companion might forget to take thepill. In the past, scientists tried to find alternate contraceptive methods for men other than condoms and vasectomy. The women’s birth control pills were rolled out in 1960, which have been a popular choice among women, but they experience mood swings, weight gain and nausea after taking them. So the possibility of a male birth control pill, even if it will be launched in the distant future, is good news indeed!
