Are you tired of feeling constrained by your periods? Are you seeking to embrace a world of confidence and comfort during your monthly menstrual cycle? Allow us to introduce you to tampons, the modern solution revolutionising women's period experiences. Tampons are cylindrical menstruation aids constructed from absorbent materials. Unlike traditional sanitary pads, tampons are designed for internal use. Inserted into the vagina, they absorb menstrual blood and expand as they soak up your menstrual flow. Below, we will guide you through their use of tampons. We also contacted Dr. Shikha Gujral, a gynaecologist from Dwarka, who shared the benefits of using tampons during periods.
How To Use A Tampon?
Not all tampons (using tampons for first time) are exactly the same. Different brands offer various sizes and materials. However, what they all have in common is that they can soak up different amounts of your period blood.
- If you're using a tampon for the first time, it can seem scary. First, make sure your hands are clean, and try to stay calm to make it easier.
- Sit on the toilet with your knees apart. Hold the tampon with one hand, holding the middle part with your thumb and middle finger. Use your index finger to hold the end of the thinner tube where the string comes out.
- With the tip of the tampon, gently open the folds of skin near your vaginal opening. Then, slide the whole tampon inside, angling it slightly toward your back. It may be uncomfortable if you try to insert it straight up.

- Insert it until it's at the same depth as your middle finger and thumb, with your main focus on the middle part or grip of the applicator.
- Once it's comfortably inside, hold the middle part and use your index finger to push on the thinner tube. This will push the absorbent part of the tampon into your vagina. Push it until it's all the way in, meeting the middle part and your other fingers.
- Using your thumb and middle finger, carefully pull out the tampon applicator, leaving the string hanging out. Remember not to pull the string; it's attached to the tampon. You'll need the string to take out the tampon when it's full.
- Later, put the applicator back in the plastic covering (or wrap it in toilet paper) and throw it away properly. Please don't flush the plastic applicators.
Benefits Of Using A Tampon
When we asked Dr. Shikha Gujral about the advantages of using tampons, she explained, 'Due to the prevailing stigma around menstruation and the undue fixation on a woman's virginity, tampons are frequently subject to misconceptions. However, here's the truth: they don't affect your virginity, and they offer numerous benefits that regular sanitary pads do not.'
Tampons Are Hygienic And Odour Free
According to Dr. Shikha Gujral, tampons are an excellent choice for individuals who seek a cleaner and odour-free option during their menstrual cycle. They directly absorb menstrual flow at its source, thus minimising the likelihood of any unwanted odour.
Tampons Prevent Leakage
In terms of preventing leaks, sanitary pads can sometimes shift or become displaced. Tampons, on the other hand, utilise the assistance of your vaginal muscles to stay securely in place. They act like absorbent plugs that effectively prevent blood from leaking. You can comfortably wear tampons for up to three to four hours, even during sports or athletic activities, without concern for potential blood stains.
Tampons Can Be Worn For Longer Periods Of Time
In contrast to pads that need to be changed more frequently, tampons offer extended wear, typically lasting from 4 to 8 hours, depending on your menstrual flow. This extended wear time translates to fewer visits to the restroom, providing a convenient option for those with busy schedules and allowing you more time to concentrate on what truly matters.
