Yoga has proved to be the most effective strategy in transforming the lives of people. Several surveys show an increasing number of people practising yoga as a part of holistic wellness. Whether you want to lose weight, improve body posture or want to adopt a healthy lifestyle, yoga is the best way to get started. We spoke to Dr Hansaji Yogendera, Director of The Yoga Institute for her insights on yoga tips for beginners. Scroll down to learn yoga tips that will help you get started as a beginner.

Dr Hansaji said, “Generally, beginners are often excited but unsure about their ability to perform asanas. Here it is important to remember that yoga is about mental and emotional balance as much as about physical wellness.”

“On your first day, you might struggle with sitting cross-legged, and find Sanskrit names challenging, but recognising the importance of breathing and understanding the mind-body connection can be helpful. Familiarising yourself with basic concepts and routines before attending can boost your confidence, making yoga a practice you look forward to daily,” she added.

Yoga Tips For Beginners

Here are the yoga tips you can follow as a beginner:

Before Starting Your Yoga Practice

  • Drink water 15 to 30 minutes before starting your yoga (yoga poses for period discomfort) session.
  • Look for beginner-friendly classes so that you do not feel too overwhelmed.
  • A non-slip yoga mat provides stability and comfort. If you use a rubber mat, keep a folded blanket or bed sheet on it.
  • Wear loose, cotton fabrics that allow for a full range of motion.
  • It is best to practise early in the morning on an empty stomach. During the day, you may practise 2 hours after a meal.
  • Ensure that you have a peaceful area in your home where you can practise without disturbances.

During Your Yoga Practice

  • Breathing is an important aspect of yoga (yoga retreats in delhi ncr). Follow breathing instructions for each pose.
  • Never force a pose and only do what your body allows you to do without much discomfort.
relaxation

Dr Hansaji said, “For beginners in yoga, a selection of simple asanas and pranayama can provide a strong start to the practice.”

  • You can start with Tadasana for improving posture and balance, Ekapadasana for enhancing concentration and leg strength, Yastikasana for a full-body stretch, Bhujangasana for strengthening the spine, Setu Bandhasana for back muscles, Balasana for stress relief, Sukhasana for calmness, and Shavasana for deep relaxation.
  • Ensure a correct posture as it prevents injuries and maximises benefits.
  • Start with warm-up stretches, move to standing poses, and then to seated, supine and prone poses.
  • If you focus on the results, you may overexert yourself. Don’t practise for the results of your performance, practice for the sake of the experience alone.
  • Always finish your session with Shavasana or any other relaxation pose to allow your body to absorb the benefits.

After Your Yoga Practice

  • Spend the last few minutes in meditation.
  • Take a moment to reflect on your session and how you feel.
  • Appreciate the opportunity you have been given to practice and express your gratitude to your Guru with a prayer.
