Yoga Does Not Discriminate Between, Race, Colour, Gender, Faith: PM Narendra Modi On International Yoga Day

PM Narendra Modi addressed the nation on International Yoga Day 2020, stating benefits of yoga and more.

On Sunday morning June 21, International Yoga Day, PM Narendra Modi addressed the nation stating the benefits and key points of yoga. With the theme of this the sixth Yoga Day since its announcement, being 'Yoga for Health - Yoga at Home', amid Covid-19, the Pm highlighted how yoga does not care about race, colour, faith. He said: "Yoga has emerged as a force for unity and it does not discriminate as it goes beyond race, colour, gender, faith and nations."

Addressing the entire nation, Modi spoke of the benefits of yoga. He said: “If our immunity is strong, it is of great help in defeating this disease. For boosting immunity, there are several techniques in Yoga, various ‘asanas' are there. COVID-19 specifically attacks our respiratory system which gets strengthened on doing 'Pranayama' or breathing exercise."

"Yoga enhances our quest for a healthier planet. It has emerged as a force for unity and deepens the bonds of humanity. It does not discriminate. It goes beyond race, colour, gender, faith, and nations. Anybody can embrace Yoga.

"If we can fine-tune our chords of health and hope, the day is not far away when the world will witness the success of healthy and happy humanity. Yoga can definitely help us make this happen, he said in his message telecast this morning. Doing work and performing duties properly is also Yoga," he added.

As yearly ritual practice in International Day of Yoga observation, post-PM Modi’s address to the nation, a live demonstration of a 45-minute Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) by a team from Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, took place.

Besides many ministers, even in Ladakh, Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnels performed yoga at Khardung La, that too at an altitude of 18000 feet.

Even in Uttarakhand, the ITBP personnel, who have been deployed at India-China border, performed yoga at an altitude of 14000 feet at Vasudhara glacier near Badrinath.

Although pandemic Covid-19 was a dampener on some plans which the Ministry of AYUSH had planned this year, that did not ruin the zest of all yoga lovers. The event was supposed to be held in Leh this year.

PM Modi had introduced the proposal to observe Yoga Day at the 69th Session of the General Assembly in 2014. In his speech, he said: “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action, a holistic approach that is valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature."

The World Health Organization too backs yoga as one of the ways to improve health in its Global Action Plan on Physical Activity 2018–2030: More active people for a healthier world.

On the eve of International Yoga Day, the Ministry of AYUSH also some images and videos showing popular cartoon characters doing yoga.

The first celebration of Yoga day was held at Rajpath in New Delhi, where PM Modi had also performed around 21 yoga asanas, creating two Guinness World Records.

It was the first time that the world’s largest yoga class was held as it had 35,985 people and the other was for 84 number of participating nationalities.
