Bhujangasana, also known as Cobra Pose, is a backbend. The name Bhujangasana originates from the Sanskrit words "bhujanga," meaning cobra, and "asana," meaning pose. This posture is practiced in the Sun Salutation sequence. We spoke to Meghna Banerjee, Counselling Psychologist, Habit Coach, and Yoga Expert at Alyve Health to understand the benefits of the same in dealing with breathing issues and reducing flat belly.
How Bhujangasana Improves Our Body And Breath
Meghna highlighted that when you practice Bhujangasana, the chest expands. This expansion allows for a greater intake of oxygen. Increased lung capacity can lead to better oxygenation of the blood, improving energy levels and vitality.
While practicing Bhujangasana, you engage your core muscles to support your back. This engagement helps tone the abdominal area, which can contribute to a flatter belly over time.
It also stimulates the digestive organs which reduces bloating and a protruding belly. A healthy digestive system is key to maintaining a flat stomach.
Anatomy Of The Cobra Pose
Meghna mentioned that it stretches the chest, shoulders, and upper back while strengthening the arms and shoulders. Here’s how it impacts different body parts:
Chest: The pectoralis muscles are stretched, which can help improve posture
Shoulders: The deltoids and trapezius muscles are stretched, which can improve flexibility.
Upper back: The rhomboids and latissimus dorsi muscles are stretched, which can reduce back pain.
How To Practice Bhujangasana For 5 Minutes
Here’s how you can practice the asana for 5 minutes for maximum benefits:
Step 1: Lie on your stomach with your hands under your shoulders.
Step 2: Inhale and press your palms into the ground, lifting your chest and head off the mat.
Step 3: Keep your shoulders down and away from your ears.
Step 4: Engage your core muscles to support your back and maintain a straight line from head to heels.
Step 5: Hold 10 deep breaths. Continue for 3 rounds.
Just 5 minutes of practicing Bhujangasana a day can lead to positive effects on both your body and mind. Yoga is a journey, and Bhujangasana is a fantastic way to start or enhance yours.
So roll out your mat, take a deep breath, and see the power of the Cobra Pose!
