Ali Fazal To Ranveer Singh: 5 Times Men Broke Gender Stereotypes With Fashion

Fashion is one of the ways in which society has set gender norms. See how a few men are breaking it.

Fashion is more than just pretty clothes, it can be a powerful weapon used to make statements. It is how we perceive and express ourselves. While society has designated clothes to particular genders, many believe that fashion can break those boundaries.

There was a time when pants were considered masculine dressing. However, today women wear them as casual pieces of clothing all the time. Similarly, Angrakhas, Anarkalis, and skirts were considered feminine clothing, but a few men around the world have shown that clothes have no gender. One can wear whatever they feel comfortable in.

Recently, Ali Fazal married the love of his life, Richa Chadha. For one of the ceremonies, he picked a white Angrakha set designed by none other than designer duo Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla.

The kurta and dupatta had intricate embroidery. Fazal opted for a white churidar and completed the look with black shoes. He also sported mehendi on his hands. He captioned the photos, “After a few trials and tailoring and exchanging notes we arrived at this wonderful piece.”

Billy Porter

Actor, writer, singer, and director Billy Porter is known for his iconic clothing choices. When it comes to dressing up for big events and red carpets, he always brings his A-game. He is often spotted wearing stunning dresses and attire often deemed to be feminine .Long before the likes of Ranveer Singh and Harry Styles adopted genderfluid dressing, Porter did to change the narrative forever.

This image is from Porter’s appearance at an event for the 2021 Cinderella, an Amazon Original Movie. He revolutionised the role of fairy Godmother, as Fab G..

Reflecting on the role, he said, “It evolved and the thing that came out of the evolution was ‘magic has no gender’, so make it genderless, gender-free, gender-fluid whatever you want to say.” We love that Porter, the first openly gay Black man to win a lead actor drama Emmy, thinks of fashion in the same way.
