Have you ever found yourself constantly reaching for a lip balm, only to find it doesn’t help much? While we often think that the cause is dehydration or harsh weather, sometimes it could indicate a deficiency of B vitamins. Our lips don’t have oil glands like the rest of our skin. That’s why they’re extra vulnerable to dryness. Tanya Khanna, Nutritionist and Yoga Trainer, Alyve Health, India’s fastest-growing health-tech platform shared about the vitamin deficiency that might lead to dry and chapped lips.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)

Riboflavin helps maintain healthy skin, including your lips. A deficiency can cause dryness, cracking at the corners of the mouth (angular cheilitis), and even a swollen, red tongue.
Sources: Milk, eggs, almonds, mushrooms, green leafy vegetables

Vitamin B3 (Niacin)

Niacin deficiency can lead to pellagra, a condition that affects the skin, mouth, and digestive tract. One early sign is red, cracked lips. Chronic alcoholism or eating mostly refined carbs can deplete your niacin levels over time.
Sources: Chicken, peanuts, fish, whole grains, mushroom, avocado

Vitamin B6: (Pyridoxine)

Vitamin B6 supports the production of neurotransmitters and skin health. A lack of B6 can cause inflamed, sore lips, often accompanied by a tingling or burning sensation.
Sources: Bananas, potatoes, chickpeas, poultry, and fortified cereals

Other Reasons For Dry Lips

Tanya highlighted that before you panic about deficiencies, remember that not drinking enough water is still the most common reason for dry lips. She recommends continuing to drink 2-3 litres of water daily.

If your dry lips are persistent and come with other symptoms like fatigue, brittle nails, or poor concentration, it’s worth talking to a healthcare provider. A basic blood test can help rule out any deficiencies. If you’re vegetarian or vegan, you might need to consciously include vitamin-rich food sources and consider taking B-complex supplements after consulting a doctor.
