We spoke to Dr Kaishreen Khan, Consultant-Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospitals, Kharadi, Pune, who explained everything expectant mothers need to know about vitamin D consumption during pregnancy.
“Yes, there’s a significant link between vitamin D consumption and pregnancy,” says Dr. Kaishreen Khan. This essential nutrient contributes to the baby’s immune system, bone, and teeth development while improving the mother’s calcium absorption. Additionally, sufficient vitamin D levels lower the risk of health complications such as preeclampsia—a serious condition characterised by high blood pressure during pregnancy.
Maintaining adequate vitamin D levels is a cornerstone of a healthy pregnancy. It helps ensure optimal growth for the baby while supporting maternal health.
According to Dr Khan, “Vitamin D encourages the development of healthy bones for the baby and significantly reduces the risk of rickets, a type of bone disease.” For mothers, vitamin D supports strong bones and a robust immune system, which is essential for warding off infections and other health issues during pregnancy.
In summary, vitamin D not only aids fetal development but also ensures maternal well-being, making it a vital component of prenatal care.
“Anything taken in excess can pose various side effects,” Dr. Khan warns. Overconsumption of vitamin D can result in hypercalcemia or high levels of calcium in the blood. This can lead to nausea, kidney problems, and other health complications.

Dr Khan highlights a variety of natural sources: “Vitamin D can be found in egg yolks, cereals, orange juice, and sunlight.” Spending time in sunlight is one of the simplest ways to boost vitamin D levels naturally.
She adds that incorporating these foods into your daily diet can help maintain adequate vitamin D levels without relying heavily on supplements. Sunlight exposure, combined with a well-balanced diet, is key to meeting your daily vitamin D requirements during pregnancy.
