Dr Kushal mentioned, “First, there is the issue of sleep quality. Research indicates that high sugar intake in the evenings can interfere with a child’s natural sleep-wake cycle, or circadian rhythm. According to a study published in late 2022, when children consume sugary foods close to bedtime, their bodies may struggle to transition into restful sleep. This can result in more frequent awakenings and overall reduced sleep duration. Over time, poor sleep patterns may contribute to decreased concentration, mood swings, and even immune system disruptions.”
Weight Management
“Another concern is weight management. Children who regularly consume sweets at night tend to have higher overall sugar intake, which can lead to excess calorie consumption. A comprehensive review emphasises the link between late-night snacking—particularly on sweet foods—and increased risk for childhood obesity. As obesity rates rise, associated health issues such as insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and metabolic syndrome become more prevalent, even in young kids, explained the doctor.

Dental Health
“Additionally, dental health is a crucial factor. When sugary residues remain on the teeth overnight, the risk of cavities increases. Because saliva flow decreases while sleeping, the oral environment is more susceptible to the growth of harmful bacteria,” said Dr Agrawal.
He added, “From a practical standpoint, if your child craves something sweet after dinner, consider healthier alternatives like fresh fruit. You can also encourage a consistent bedtime routine that includes brushing teeth and limiting sweet snacks in the hours leading up to lights out. Small, mindful adjustments can have a big impact over time.”
