Ms. Ritu Singh, CEO & CO-Founder at ElaWoman which is a data-driven fertility care platform, says that it takes the involvement of both men and women to make a baby. A woman carries a pregnancy to due term and gives birth to the child. The same way a man also has an important role to play to allow a successful conception to take place. Healthy and strong sperm is required to reach and penetrate the woman’s egg for fertilisation.
Singh believes that for successful fertilisation, a man should be able to produce sperm that has the appropriate morphology, quality, and count. A problem in the movement and shape of the sperm can prevent pregnancy. There are a variety of factors affecting fertility levels in men such as medical, lifestyle and environmental factors. Thus, sperm count plays a significant role in helping couples to become parents. Making certain lifestyle changes in routine life, such as work-out and avoiding substance abuse will help couples in realizing their dreams of parenthood.
Below Singh has explained a variety of foods that your partner should add to his dietary habits:
Antioxidants are molecules produced in the body and are found in foods like pecans, strawberries, artichokes, raspberries, goji berries, beetroot, and red cabbage. Antioxidants are responsible for defending cells from getting damaged by harmful compounds called free radicals. Antioxidant-rich foods help in the healthy development of sperm and increasing sperm count.
Having foods which are rich in zinc such as red meat and poultry, oysters, crabs, and lobsters can help in improving sperm count and quality. Zinc levels are lower in men having infertility problems. The combination of folate and zinc has been shown in several research studies to increase overall sperm health, including sperm count.
Coenzyme which is also widely known as CoQ10 is an effective antioxidant which is responsible for the proper functioning of all living cells. Foods, which contain Coenzyme Q10 antioxidant, are beef and chicken, fish, sunflower seeds, peanuts, and pistachios.
Consuming foods which are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids can help in enhancing sperm motility, count and morphology. Foods containing Omega-3 are yogurt, beverages, flaxseed, and plant-based oil, and canola oil, seafood such as tuna, salmon, sardines, and herring.
