World Health Day: Keeping Up With The #HealthForAll, 5 Food Items You Must Add To Your Diet

This World Health Day, we are focusing on the health of everyone. Therefore, we connected with a nutritionist to bring you a few ingredients that everyone must add to their diet to improve their heart, skin, gut and hair health.

Every year, World Health Day is celebrated on April 7 to spread awareness about staying fit. Under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO), the day came into effect in 1948 when the organisation held its first meeting.

It is meant to highlight public health issues that make it the theme of the year. The theme of 2023 is Health For All. On the 75th anniversary of the day, it is set around spreading awareness about everyone’s health at a time when we have learnt to co-exist with Covid-19.

In 2020, the theme was to support healthcare staff since they were the first responders when the pandemic engulfed the world. In 2021, it addressed inequities that exist in the world of healthcare. In 2022, it was about how the health of humans and the planet go hand in hand.

Considering #HealthForAll, we reached out to Anupama Menon, Nutritionist, Health Coach and Founder & Director Right Living. She told us about five food items that everyone must try to include in their diet.

Garlic

Soak two cloves of garlic overnight. Add half an inch of ginger, one-fourth teaspoon of turmeric (haldi) powder and a pinch of black pepper in a glass of water. In the morning, strain the water, crush or blend everything along with half a teaspoon of honey and consume it.

It will help people to reduce the levels of LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) or bad cholesterol. It also reduces the amount of triglyceride in the body. The mixture is rich in ingredients that possess anti-inflammatory properties that provide extra benefits.

Chia, Sunflower or Flax Seeds

Seeds are loaded with multiple nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Mix two tablespoons of chia seeds with a tablespoon of flax seeds or sunflower seeds. Soak them overnight and have them in the morning.

Chia seeds help to regulate blood sugar levels which helps heart patients to improve their condition. Sunflower seeds are a rich source of omega 3 that is known to improve the levels of good cholesterol or HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein). If you suffer from constipation, a mixture of flax and chia seeds can improve gut health.

Coconut Oil or Ghee

You must have seen celebrities and wellness influencers talking about the benefits of coconut oil and ghee all the time. Well, they are not all wrong. One or two teaspoons of any of the two ingredients with black coffee or hot water can help to improve the health of the gut.

Virgin coconut oil has antibacterial properties that can create a shield around the intestinal lining and help the body heal. Menon said that while both ingredients are rich in fat, if a person consumes them in the morning, they can immensely benefit from the consumption as it helps to regulate insulin levels in the body.

Spirulina

One can consume spirulina powder with juice from two lemons and two amlas. The mixture is rich in antioxidants and micronutrients. It can be a helpful home remedy for people struggling with hair fall.

The ingredients are known for boosting immunity, reducing the risks of heart-related issues and preventing oxidative damage. Spirulina is rich in iron and can help people suffering from anaemia.

Collagen (Type 1 & 3)

Collagen powder is available as a supplement, which is immensely beneficial for the health of skin and hair. Menon suggested using unflavoured and hydrolysed powder. You can mix a scoop of it with water and a tablespoon of lemon juice and consume it.
