Winter weather often strips the scalp of its natural oils, leading to dryness, dandruff, and increased hair fall. While store-bought products are convenient, traditional DIY herbal oils allow you to use potent, fresh ingredients without harsh chemicals. Here are four DIY herbal hair oils specifically designed to combat winter hair fall and promote regrowth.
Try these for stronger hair and lesser hairfall.
Amla is rich in Vitamin C, which helps in collagen production, while curry leaves are packed with antioxidants and amino acids that strengthen hair follicles.
Ingredients: One cup of coconut oil, 3-4 fresh Amla (sliced), and a handful of Curry leaves.
Preparation: Heat the coconut oil on a low flame. Add amla and curry leaves. Let them simmer until the leaves turn brown. Cool and strain.
Winter Benefit: Prevents premature greying and strengthens roots weakened by dry weather.
Fenugreek seeds are a miracle for winter dandruff and hair fall. Hibiscus acts as a natural conditioner, adding shine to dull, winter-worn hair.
Ingredients: One cup of sesame oil (warmer for winter), 5-6 Hibiscus flowers/leaves, and two tbsp of fenugreek seeds.
Preparation: Soak fenugreek seeds in the oil overnight. The next day, add hibiscus and heat the oil until the flowers shrivel.
Winter Benefit: Treats itchy scalp and provides deep hydration to brittle ends.

Onion juice is famous for its sulfur content, which aids in hair regrowth. Nigella seeds have anti-inflammatory properties that soothe a dry, irritated winter scalp.
Ingredients: One cup of olive oil (rich and heavy for winter), one chopped Onion, and one tbsp Nigella seeds.
Preparation: Heat the onion and seeds in olive oil until the onion turns translucent and slightly charred. Strain carefully to remove the onion bits.
Winter Benefit: Significantly reduces hair shedding and improves hair density.
Known as the ‘King of Hair,’ Bhringraj, combined with Brahmi, helps improve blood circulation to the scalp, which often slows down in colder temperatures.
Ingredients: One cup Almond oil, two tbsp Bhringraj powder (or fresh leaves), and one tbsp Brahmi powder.
Preparation: Use a double-boiler method (place a bowl over a pot of boiling water) to heat the oil and herbs together for 20 minutes. This prevents the herbs from burning.
Winter Benefit: Calms the nervous system and revitalises dormant hair follicles.
Warm the Oil: Always use the ‘Inversion Method’ by warming the oil slightly before application to help it penetrate the hair shaft.
Scalp Massage: Massage in circular motions for 5–10 minutes to stimulate blood flow.
Steaming: Wrap a warm towel around your head for 15 minutes after oiling to open up the pores.
