Karwa Chauth fast is considered one of the most difficult fasts among Hindus. People who observe it prefer not to drink or eat between sunrise and moonrise, not even a sip of water or morsel. One would think that people would rush to eat a heavy meal post breaking the fast. However, many feel that they cannot eat as much as they feel hungry because they haven’t eaten or drank anything during the day.
Therefore, it is crucial to pay attention to what you drink or eat first. We connected with Pooja Kedia, executive nutritionist, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Whitefield, Bengaluru, to bring you a guide on breaking the Karwa Chauth fast without affecting your health.
She said, “How to break the fast is important to consider and point of stress for many women. This needs more attention if a pregnant woman decides to fast on Karwa Chauth.”
She added that pregnant women should avoid fasting on Karwa Chauth because they need to eat meals at shorter intervals so that they and their unborn child get complete nutrition. Too much of a gap between meals is not good for the baby.
Here is how women, irrespective if they are expecting or not, should break the fast.
Drink Water To Hydrate Yourself Post Breaking Fast
Once you have broken the fast, you should drink water and hydrate your body. Since you have not eaten or drank anything in more than 12 hours, your digestive system cannot handle large quantities of food. It can lead to vomiting, nausea, and other health issues.
Dehydration can make pregnant women feel more tired and even dizzy. When you have breakfast, you should drink water in small quantities. The expert advised against gulping down a large amount. It will also help to break down the food and regulate your bowel movements.
You can drink water, lemon water, coconut water, barley water, and chia seeds water. The expert said that coconut water is the best option because it contains potassium and salt. It will energise your body quickly and facilitate the movement of carbohydrates. The expert said, “I recommend drinking half a glass of coconut water before eating any solid food to break the fast.”
Fruits Post Karwa Chauth Fast Add Fibre To The Body
The expert said that you must eat fruits post Karwa Chauth fast because they are loaded with fibre and water content. They are soluble and can prevent acid reflux during pregnancy.
“Fruits are rich in natural sugars for energy, fluid, vitamins and minerals. You can have water chestnuts, watermelon, apples, and pomegranates because they are good fruits to break your fast,” said Pooja Kedia.
Starting a meal with fruits will help you restore energy and water content in the body.
Have Soups Post Breaking Karwa Chauth Fast
The nutritionist suggested trying healthy soups (Try These Soup Recipes At Home) after breaking your Karwa Chauth fast. You can try moong dal soup, whey soup, carrot soup, pumpkin soup, barley soup, and mixed veg soup.
These options are rich in protein, carbs, and essential nutrients. They are easy to digest and prevent you from feeling bloated or experiencing discomfort in the tummy. The expert said, “You should not put cheese or cream in the soup as that will be difficult to digest and can make you feel uncomfortable.”
