Elderberry lemon balm tea has been in the news for a long time now. Some say it is extremely good to alleviate stress, while others comment that the tea is harmful for those who have pre-diagnosed stomach issues. To clear the confusion and understand if elderberry lemon balm tea is at all worth the hype, we reached out to Ms Deepali Sharma, clinical nutritionist at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, and she said that since it is a medicinal beverage, it has obvious benefits. However, some reported side effects are present as well. Here’s more.

Elderberry Lemon Balm Tea: Benefits, Side-Effects, And More

Ms Sharma said that elderberry lemon balm tea blends elderberries, lemon balm leaves, and possibly other plant components. “It is usually consumed as bubble tea, which adds to the texture and flavour. The tea uses old-fashioned therapeutic techniques that have been employed in ensuring wellness,” she added.

The benefits of this beverage are because of the vitamin and antioxidant content of the components. Some of the advantages are:

  • Better digestion
  • Stress alleviation
  • Increased immunity
  • Better sleep

However, there is no scientific evidence or study to back these claims. “Its impact cannot be scientifically proven, and results can vary for different individuals. But as per traditional medicine, elderberry and lemon balm, when combined, can strengthen immunity and reduce the flu and cold symptoms,” she pointed out.

This tea is a part of the healthy regimen of many but should not be used “as a cure or a remedy for anything,” Ms Sharma added.

As for the side effects, they are usually mild because elderberry lemon balm tea is a “plant-based, natural product,” she highlighted. However, she advised those “who have a berry or lemon allergy, as well as those who have gastrointestinal disorders, including diarrhea or vomiting” should avoid this drink.

“It is also recommended that anyone taking blood thinners speak with a physician before drinking the tea,” the dietitian warned.

How Is Elderberry Lemon Balm Tea Made?

Elderberry lemon balm tea is not a difficult beverage to make. For this, you only need two products: dried elderberries and lemon balm leaves. Steep these two in hot water and you have your tea.

Depending on your taste, you can choose the blends. “Some blends may have elderberry plant leaves or a mix of other herbs and will either be sweetened or put into bubble tea with tapioca pearls. Naturally, the mixture of substances aids in obtaining a sufficient quantity of vitamins and antioxidants,” she suggests.

Courtesy of its ingredients, one can drink elderberry lemon balm tea as a wellness drink on a daily basis.

“While it has shown benefits for many individuals, it would be preferable to be clear on the drink's suitability with a physician, GP, or nutritionist, especially if you have particular health issues or take medications for any health issues,” wraps up Ms Deepali Sharma, a clinical nutritionist at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi.
