Our body is a storehouse of several chemicals and antioxidants that support growth. Amongst all, Glutathione has gained popularity in recent years. We spoke to Dr Priya Prajapati, Consultant Homoeopath at Chicnutrix to gain a deeper understanding of the term and its magical benefits. Scroll down to learn about glutathione- a lesser-known yet magical antioxidant.
Glutathione, often called the “master antioxidant,” is a vital compound for protecting cells from oxidative stress, supporting immune function, and enhancing detoxification. As a naturally occurring tripeptide made up of three amino acids glutamine, cysteine, and glycine glutathione is produced within the body and is present in nearly every cell, playing a central role in preserving cellular health and resilience.
Here are the benefits of Glutathione:
Dr Priya Prajapati highlights that glutathione’s primary role is in combating oxidative stress, a condition caused by an overload of free radicals and unstable molecules that can damage cells and contribute to ageing and various diseases, including cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s. Dr Priya added that glutathione neutralises these free radicals and prevents cellular damage, contributing to a stronger defence against ageing and illness. This antioxidant action is especially important for liver health, where glutathione assists in detoxifying harmful substances, including environmental pollutants, heavy metals, and certain drugs.
Dr Priya highlights that glutathione is essential for a robust immune system. It aids in regulating inflammation and stimulates white blood cell production and activity, which are critical for fighting infections. She added that low glutathione levels are often associated with weakened immune responses, making the body more susceptible to infections and chronic diseases. Therefore, maintaining adequate glutathione levels is vital, particularly for individuals with chronic health conditions or those frequently exposed to toxins.

Dr Priya emphasises that factors like ageing, poor diet, pollution, and ongoing stress can deplete the body’s glutathione reserves, making lifestyle choices key to sustaining optimal levels. Although the body can produce glutathione, it can also be supplemented through dietary sources rich in sulphur, such as garlic, onions, and cruciferous vegetables, or direct supplementation.
She advises consuming effervescent glutathione tablets to replenish this antioxidant conveniently and quickly. These tablets dissolve rapidly, offering faster absorption to support glowing skin and overall wellness.
