Do you know what's common between Malaika Arora, Jacqueline Fernandez, and Shehnaaz Gill? Their love for Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV). These celebrities, like many others, swear by the numerous benefits of the sour-tasting liquid. Some of its established positives are it lowers blood glucose, and cholesterol, improves gut health, and may contribute to weight loss, among others. But, those who tend to suffer from acidity frequently have a common aversion towards apple cider vinegar. They believe due to its acidic content, ACV might cause them gastric troubles. Dr. Ridhima Khamesra, nutritionist and health coach in North India, shares whether you should consume ACV if you have an acidic tendency.

Should You Have Apple Cider Vinegar If You Have Acidity Problem?

Apple cider vinegar is a vinegar made from crushed apples and it is fermented using bacteria and yeast. The culinary world uses it in marinades, salad dressings, vinaigrettes, chutneys, and food preservatives. As for the taste, it is sour as mentioned before, and so those who have acidic tendencies may feel repelled by that and also may "have what is commonly referred to as heartburn, which is a pain in the chest," says Dr. Khamesra.

Acetic acid and essential bacteria in ACV are known to improve digestion, which is why many people drink it regularly, she shares, adding, "For people who have low stomach acid - especially those who use proton pump inhibitors (drugs that decrease production of stomach acid and treat acid-related conditions) and antacids - this can bring their stomach to correct acid level. However, the studies are incomplete and there is not enough research to support the claim."

Generally, chances of apple cider vinegar causing acid reflux are minimal "or for the long term, its effects are undocumented. It is used to help with blood sugar and weight loss without experiencing adverse effects," Dr. Khamesra adds.

However, we all are different and so are our systems. "Those with GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease) or acid reflux should not try this as it can increase the irritation. You can try this for low acidity but if you tend towards a higher scale, i.e., moderate to high, this can increase the acidity and must be used with caution," she warns.

Dr. Khamesra recommends a tip: If you want to try, dilute about1 tablespoonof ACV in 200ml of water to prevent burning. If you find it too sour you can add honey. Drink this before or after a meal. Watch how your body responds.

Effect of Apple Cider Vinegar on Teeth

There is one more reason why Dr. Khamesra suggests diluting the apple cider vinegar before consuming it.

"Diluting apple cider vinegar in water before drinking can help prevent damage to the teeth, esophagus, and other parts of the digestive tract. Drinking ACV can lead to enamel erosion and to avoid that use a straw, if possible. Also, rinse your mouth with water after taking it," she adds.

If you are still in doubt, you can take apple cider vinegar pills and effervescent tablets, which are readily available in the market and online.

"It tastes nice but don't forget to read the label properly...My suggestion would be to speak to your doctor or your dietician before consuming such home remedies," Dr. Khamesra wraps up.
