disadvantages of apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has been sold in the market as an elixir. It has been proven to be an effective part of the weight loss diet and comes with many more benefits for your health. What you might not know is that this kitchen ingredient also has a few disadvantages for your body.

We spoke to Pooja Kedia, executive nutritionist at Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Bengaluru, to understand how we should add apple cider vinegar to our diet to reduce its side effects.

She said, “Apple cider vinegar is made by mixing apple extract with yeast. It acts on the apple extract and converts the sugar content into alcohol. The resulting mixture is fermented using bacteria, which converts the alcohol into acetic acid, which finally makes up 5-6% of apple cider vinegar. Even though acetic acid is a ‘weak acid’, it can have some side effects when concentrated.”

Apple Cider Vinegar Can Lead To Low Potassium

Apple cider vinegar is associated with lowering the potassium content in the body. If the amount of this mineral reduces, the body becomes vulnerable to hypokalemia, which leads to weakness of muscles and paralysis.

If you have low potassium in the body, you might experience symptoms like weakness, fatigue, muscle cramps, and irregular heart rhythm. If you consume apple cider vinegar in concentrated amounts for a long period, you might struggle with this side effect.

Apple Cider Vinegar Can Lead To Digestive Problems

Apple cider vinegar is associated with suppressing diet if consumed in large amounts. It makes a person feel full for a long time by reducing the rate at which the food leaves the stomach.

Therefore, if you consume undiluted apple cider vinegar, you might experience acidity, indigestion, nausea, and stomach ulcers. The nutritionist suggested that people battling with gastroparesis should avoid adding this ingredient to their diet.

Apple Cider Vinegar Can Lower Blood-Sugar Levels

Our expert said that though apple cider vinegar is considered a good option to manage blood sugar levels, consuming it in large quantities can lower the levels in your body.

Hence, Kedia suggested diabetic people be cautious if they are taking medicines for lowering blood sugar levels. If you consume it in large amounts, it can lead to hypoglycemia.
