We all know a combination of exercising and diet is a gold spot to lose those kilos and maintain overall well-being. But do you remain bulky even after exercising regularly and following a healthy food routine? This is called unintentional weight gain, and admittedly, it is frustrating. However, you are not alone in this struggle. To correctly understand the problem, you need to know what is causing the same.

4 Reasons Behind Unintentional Weight Gain

1) Stress

When stressed, our bodies slip into the "survival mode." In this situation, there is a spike in the level of cortisol or one of the stress hormones, which in turn pushes our hunger up. This results in emotional eating, and that's when we gorge on calorie-dense food items, causing exponential weight gain. Stress also increases our blood sugar levels. When that takes place for an extended period, our bodies start storing the excess sugar as fat, again leading to adding kilos. To combat this disturbance, practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and incorporate yoga into your regime.

2) Sleeping pattern

The National Sleep Foundation states those aged 18–65 must target 7–9 hours of sleep per night, while people older than that should aim for 7–8 hours. Anything less than that and an overall poor quality of your naps will inevitably impact your weight loss run. The chances of you getting obesity and diabetes also rise in such situations. Sleep deprivation slows down metabolism, leaving you with constant feelings of hunger.

3) The right exercise regime

A minimum of 150 minutes of moderate to intense aerobic physical activity per week is enough for adults, as per the WHO. However, don't overexert as inflammation builds up in your body. The more that happens, the more weight you gain. Also, avoid getting a weight loss plateau or a condition where your weight stops changing. Rev up your workout regime according to your body type and need, but under careful supervision.

4) Genetics

No matter how much you try, you cannot ignore the patterns left by your genes. The family line comprising specific genes determines where you will store the fat in your body and the amount of fat cells. So, the next time you pull your chubby tummy, see how your parents look. You might get a definitive answer there.
