Transgenders have not been considered as part of mainstream society for a long time. Even though, as Indian history states, before the Britishers’ arrival to the subcontinent, transgenders were highly respected and involved in society. However, the British imposed Section 377 which banned transgender rights. After years of fighting for their position in society, transgenders have gained some liberty in terms of choosing their careers, as of now.
Ahead of Women’s Day 2024, check out these trans women who have been in the Indian film industry and are breaking all the bounds.
Anjali Ameer
Anjali Ameer is one of the few openly trans women in the Indian film industry. After rising to fame with ‘Bigg Boss Malayalam’, she made her acting debut with the Tamil movie ‘Peranbu’ in 2019 and went on to do other significant movies including ‘Suvarna Purushan’ and ‘Ammu’.
Gazal Dhaliwal
Gazal Dhaliwal is an award-winning Bollywood scriptwriter who openly advocates for LGBTQ+ rights. She was an assistant writer in the film ‘Wazir’. After which she wrote dialogues for ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’, and co-wrote the screenplay for ‘Qarib Qarib Singlle’, and ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’.
Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju
The Instagram celebrity and doctor Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju is now also an actress. The influencer made her acting debut in the Amazon Prime web series ‘Made in Heaven’ season 2. She was also a part of the Malayalam movie ‘Ammu’ in 2022. She has titles including Forbes India 30 Under 30 (2022) and GQ India 50 Most Influential Young Indians (2022).
Bobby Darling
Bobby Darling was a famous name in Bollywood. She started her career in the 1990s and worked in many movies, mostly in comic roles due to societal backlashes towards her gender identity. She has worked in movies like ‘Chalte Chalte’, ‘Apna Sapna Money Money’, and ‘Bigg Boss’.
Ivanka Das
Ivanka Das is a transgender woman actor who made her debut with the 2022 thriller movie ‘Haddi’. She has also starred in movies including ‘Maja Ma’, and ‘Ghoomer’ and the Netflix web series ‘Bombay Begums’. She has won the National Film Award for Best Actress for Haddi.
