The 31-year-old Kannada actress Ranya Rao landed into controversy after being arrested at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru for allegedly smuggling 14.8 kg of gold. Who Is Ranya Rao?
As reported by Times of India, Ranya hailed from Chikmagalur, Karnataka, and did her engineering at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, Bengaluru before stepping into the film industry. She made her acting debut in 2014 with the Kannada movie Maanikya, directed by Sudeep, where she portrayed the character Manasa, a wealthy young woman and the protagonist’s love interest.
Later, she ventured into theTamil film industry in 2016, with the Wagah movie starring Vikram Prabhu in a romantic drama. The following year, she was seen in the Kannada film, Pataki, where she played the role of a journalist and the love interest of actor Ganesh’s character.
About Arrest Case
The actress made headlines after being arrested on Monday night by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and was presented before an economics offence court that remanded her to 14 days in Judicial custody. According to officials, the actress had arrived from Dubai on an Emirates flight and had been under surveillance due to her frequent international travel. Investigators revealed that she had allegedly smuggled the gold by wearing a major portion of it and hiding gold bars in her clothing. Suspicion arose after her frequent travels to Dubai, making four trips in 15 days. Primary investigations suggest that the actress may have attempted to use her connections to bypass custom checks.

According to reports, the actress claimed to be the daughter of Karnataka’s Director General of Police upon landing and contacted local police personnel to escort her home. In the current scenario, the officials are probing whether any law enforcement officers including her IPS relatives were aware of her activities or supporting her. After arrest, she was taken to the DRI headquarters in Bengaluru’s HBR layout for further questioning.
