Lata Mangeshkar, also known as Swarkokila, was the most famous Indian female singer. With a flourishing career of almost eighty years, she recorded over 50,000 songs in more than 36 Indian languages including Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, Gujarati, etc. She also won the Guinness World Record for this record-breaking number.

The Nightingale of India was known for her melodious voice brimming with intricate emotions that touched a million hearts. The pain incurred from her ill-fated love story not many know about.

Lata Mangeshkar’s Love Story

The eldest daughter of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, a Marathi musician and theatre artist, Lata Mangeshkar was born in 1929. She was a die-hard cricket fan which paved the way for her love story with Rajasthan’s fast-medium bowler Raj Singh Dungarpur.

The princess of Bikaner, Rajyashree Kumari, talked about their relationship in her autobiography called 'Palace of Clouds: A Memoir'. She mentioned that they were introduced by Lata Mangeshkar’s younger brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar. Dungarpur, a cricket enthusiast, who belonged to a royal family arrived in Mumbai in 1959 to pursue a degree in Law where he met Hridaynath, also a cricket player. This led to their friendship.

Dungarpur often visited the Mangeshkar house to meet his friend where he met Lata ji. Their casual conservations soon led to friendship and gradually blossomed into love.

After completing his degree, Raj Singh headed home to his royal palace where he discussed his intentions of marrying the singer. He met with a rigid rejection as Mangeshkar was from a non-royal background. After immense pressure, he had to give in and cancel his plans for the marriage.

Both Lata Mangeshkar and Raj Singh Dungarpur spent a life of singlehood as they never chose to marry another being. It is said that Mangeshkar visited Dungarpur in 2009 when Raj Singh died to get his last glimpse.

Who Was Raj Singh Dungarpur?

Born into a royal family in 1935, cricketer Raj Singh Dungarpur was the youngest son of the ruler of Dungarpur, Maharawal Lakshman Singhji. He played for Rajasthan in the Ranji. He also played over 80 first-class cricket matches from 1955 to 1971.

After flourishing as the national selector for two terms, he was promoted to the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
