Dev Anand was the heartthrob of the nation. He left the audience mesmerised with his exceptional acting and realistic portrayal of his characters on-screen. While so much is known about the talented actor’s professional journey and impactful movies, his ill-fated love story with a Bollywood actor remains covered under multiple veils.
Let us dive into the epic love story of Dev Anand and his co-star Suraiya which failed despite intense love between the two.
Dev Anand And Suraiya Love Story
Dev Anand, born Dharamdev Pishorimal Anand in September 1923, was a versatile actor with over 100 movies throughout his career. After graduating in English Literature from the Government College, Lahore in British India, he entered the world of Bollywood debuting with 'Hum Ek Hain' in 1946.
While toiling hard and attempting to establish his name in the industry, he worked with many actresses of his time; Suraiya was one of them. She was a singer and actress who stole Dev Anand’s heart and soon their on-screen chemistry transformed to an off-screen one.
It is said that Suraiya lost her heart to Dev Anand while shooting for the song 'Kinare Kinare Chale Jayen Ge' from the movie 'Vidya' when their boat collapsed and he saved her and thus began their four-year-long love story.
The actors had planned to elope and get married in 1949 after facing family and religious clashes. Dev Anand belonged to a Hindu family while Suraiya was a Muslim. Suraiya’s maternal grandmother and uncle strongly opposed their relationship and even threatened to get Dev Anand assassinated. She had to end their relationship in 1951 which is when they last worked together.
