Former cricketer and member of Lok Sabha, Kirti Azad lost his wife today at 12:45 AM. Reportedly, Kirti’s wife Poonam Jha Azad was suffering from a prolonged illness. Heartbroken by the tragic incident, Kirti took to his X handle to share the news with everyone. "My wife, Poonam, is no more. Left for her heavenly aboard at 12:40 PM. Thank you all for your good wishes,” the post read.

Poonam Jha Azad has worked as a politician leading the Aam Aadmi Party till 2016 before switching to the Congress in 2017. After two years, her husband Kirti also joined the INC before moving to the Trinamool Congress in 2021 after he met with TMC Chief Banerjee in Delhi.

Following the demise of Kirti Azad’s wife, Mamta Banerjee took to her X handle to share her condolences saying, "Saddened to know that Poonam Jha Azad, wife of our MP & World Cup-winner cricketer Kirti Azad, has breathed her last. I have known Poonam for a long time. I also knew that she was critically ill for the last few years. Kirti & other family members tried their best & were always beside her in her last fight. My sincere condolences to Kirti & other family members. May her soul rest in peace."

Kirti Azad was a part of India's 1983 World Cup winning squad and also featured in the first edition of the Asia Cup which was held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The son of former Chief Minister of Bihar Bhagwat Jha Azad, Kirti was an aggressive right-hand batsman and a quickish offspinner. Kirti belongs to the family of Indian freedom fighter and politician Bhagwat Jha Azad. Kirti and Poonam have two children named Surya and Soumya.
