Women, who remain anonymous, accused Toback of sexual assault. While Toback denied the allegations, calling them “false and outrageous,” the lawsuit argues that Toback's denials are part of a larger pattern of behavior, where he has repeatedly denied allegations of sexual misconduct.

Oscar-nominated filmmaker James Toback has been ordered by a New York jury to pay a staggering $1.68 billion to 40 women who accused him of sexual assault, coercion, and psychological abuse spanning over four decades.

About The Lawsuit

The 80-year-old James Toback was among the early names linked to the #MeToo movement in 2017. The lawsuit, filed in December 2022 under New York’s Adult Survivors Act, allowed sexual assault survivors to seek justice despite the expiration of the original statute of limitations.

The trial lasted for seven days and saw 20 women’s testimony in person and video statements from 20 others. Their testimonies painted a disturbing picture of Toback’s alleged predatory behaviour, luring women with promises of acting opportunities before subjecting them to unwanted sexual acts.

Unprecedented Legal Outcome

The six-member jury ultimately awarded $280 million in compensatory damages and a monumental $1.4 billion in punitive damages, believed to be one of the largest sex assault verdicts in New York state history. The plaintiffs’ legal team, led by attorney Brad Beckworth, described the verdict as “a declaration” and a strong message to individuals who abuse positions of power.

Beckworth said, “This verdict is about justice, more importantly, it’s about taking power back from abusers and returning it to those who were silenced.” The ruling marks another significant milestone in the #MeToo era and underlines the legal system’s evolving response to historical allegations of sexual misconduct.
