It is inevitable to avoid getting colours on your skin on Holi unless you absolutely skip all the festivities. While we all enjoy applying colours to each other’s faces, we forget how they can affect our skin.
Once we are done playing Holi, the next comes the stage where we would do anything to get rid of the multicoloured paint. However, we must take into account our skin before applying any ingredient especially when it is at its most vulnerable state.
Holi colours can cause dehydration on combination skin and lead to patchy dermal layer, redness and inflammation. Such skin usually is a combination of an oily nose, forehead and chin and dry cheeks. Therefore, you need to use ingredients that set a balance between oily and dry dermal layers and remove the colour without causing any harm, else, you might experience blackheads, pimples, open pores and acne.
Therefore, we spoke to Shahnaz Husain, a hair and beauty expert, to bring you homemade solutions to get rid of Holi colours without harming your skin.
To remove colours, you should first use some light cleansing milk. Massage it across your face, leave it for a few minutes and use a cotton pad to clean it. You can also use a glycerine soap or deep pore cleansing scrubs, it will reduce open pores and diminish blackheads.
You can also use cold rose water as a toner. Apply it after cleansing your face. Use a cotton pad instead of coloured hands for application.
Mix a tablespoon of crushed oats in an egg white. Once the paste is smooth, apply it to the oily part of your face. Wait for 15 to 20 minutes for it to dry. Rub it gently in a circular motion and wash your face with running water.
Take one tablespoon each of cold milk and cucumber juice and half a teaspoon of lemon juice in a bowl. Mix everything together and apply it to your face using a brush.
Keep the mask for about 10 minutes or until it dries out. Massage it gently and wash it off with lukewarm water. These ingredients will help remove colours while hydrating the skin, reducing pigmentation and evening out the tone.
Honey is one of the all-rounder ingredients for people with combination skin types. Mix a tablespoon of it with an egg white and a teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply the mixture on your face and wash it off after 20 minutes. “Both lemon juice and egg white have a cleansing effect and would help to remove colours,” Husain added.
You can add that extra hydration with fruits like banana, and papaya pulp and apply by creating a mask at home. Mash all three ingredients in equal quantities in a bowl and apply the mixture to your face. Wash it all off after 20 minutes.
Mix a teaspoon each of wheat bran (choker), oats, ground almonds (ways to use almond oil), honey and curd or egg white. Keep the consistency thick. These ingredients suit both dry and oily areas of the skin. Apply on the face and wash it off after half an hour with lukewarm water.
