Holi is all about colour, celebration, and sunshine. But for your skin, it’s also a mix of harsh pigments, prolonged UV exposure, sweat, and repeated washing. Every year, dermatologists see a spike in irritation, breakouts, tanning, and dryness right after the festival. The good news? This is preventable damage with correct skincare. So what comes first: oil, sunscreen, or moisturiser? Let’s break it down scientifically.

Oil, Sunscreen, Or Moisturiser First? The Right Layering Order For Holi Protection

Begin With A Light Moisturiser

According to Inputs By Dr Khushboo Jha, MBBS, MD, Chief Dermatologist, Consultant Metro Hospital and Founder of One Skin Clinic, “Your base layer should always be a moisturiser. Why? Because hydrated skin has a stronger barrier. When your skin barrier is intact, it’s less likely to absorb synthetic colours deeply.” Opt for a lightweight moisturiser of non-comedogenic nature if your skin is oily or prone to breakouts. For individuals possessing dry and sensitive skin, a ceramide or glycerin-based moisturiser works. Apply it to clean, dry skin and allow it to absorb for 2–3 minutes.

Opt For A Broad Spectrum Sunscreen With A Minimum SPF Of 30

Holi is usually played outdoors, which means sun exposure is unavoidable. Colours plus UV rays can increase pigmentation and tanning. Sunscreen is non-negotiable.

Use:

●      Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or above

●      Water- and sweat-resistant formula

Apply two fingers’ worth for the face and neck. Also keep your ears, hairline and back of neck in mind. After it gets settled for five minutes, begin with the next step. Also, skipping sunscreen and relying completely on oil is one of the biggest yet common mistakes. Oil has no UV protection.

Oil Layer For Sealing

Now comes the oil, but only as the topmost layer. Just a thin layer of coconut oil, almond oil or any mineral oil creates a slippery surface that makes it hard for colours to stick, thus getting washed easily. However, don’t overdo this layer as it can turn out to be comedogenic. Also, avoid heavy oil base if your skin is prone to breakouts. When it comes to hair, oil your scalp and lengths before going out as it decreases dryness and even colour penetration.

Bonus Tips for Extra Protection

●      Carry your sunglasses along and wear a full-sleeved outfit

●      3-4 days before Holi, avoid actives such as retinol, chemical peels or skin exfoliation.

●      Choose a thick lip balm

●      Also, after the celebrations, cleanse your face gently and don’t scrub aggressively.

The Correct Order, Simplified:

Moisturiser → Sunscreen → Oil

Think of it as: Hydrate. Protect. Seal.

The right layering makes all the difference between glowing skin and post-Holi regret. Celebrate freely — just let your skincare work smartly in the background.
