This International Yoga Day (June 21, 2023), we will talk about hair woes. Hair fall is one of the most common issues we experience during rainy and winter seasons. While it could also be the result of an underlying health issue, in many cases stress, hair products, poor quality of water, etc. can be the reasons behind the woe.
Though it is a common issue, it can be embarrassing when you see strands on the chair, pillow cover, or around the house. Eating healthy, using natural products, and taking care of your locks can help to reduce hair fall. But did you know that yoga can also be helpful in combating the issue?
We connected with Kamlesh Singh, Yoga Instructor at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Science, Lucknow, to understand which poses can help us deal with this hair woe that keeps us worried throughout the day.
Adho Mukho Savasana (Downward Dog Pose)
You have to sit with both your legs and hands on the floor, just like a dog. Now push your hips outwards and pull your stomach inside. Hold this position for a few breaths and release.
This pose improves the circulation of blood and helps to find relief from stress and anxiety.
Sarvangasana
First, lie down on the floor with your feet resting on the wall. Your legs will now be perpendicular to the floor. Gentle try to lift your upper body and hold your back with your hands to offer it support. You should be able to balance the body on your shoulders.
This asana enhances blood circulation in the head and will prove to be beneficial for your hair in the long run. Dr Singh said that people with heart problems, slipped discs, and high blood pressure must speak with their doctor before performing this pose.
Balasana
Also referred to as the child’s pose, Balasana can help to combat hair fall, digestive problems, anxiety, and stress. You have to sit on your knees, therefore, make sure to use a yoga mat to prevent bruising. Bend forward and stretch your hands either in the front or towards your feet. People suffering from high blood pressure, slipped discs, knee injuries, and severe back and neck pain must avoid this pose.
Sirsasana
Sirsasana or headstand boosts blood circulation towards your head, which can help to reduce hair fall and hair thinning issues. To ace the headstand, you have to kneel first. Lock your fingers before placing your hands behind your head. Touch the forehead to the ground, and slowly raise your legs perpendicular to the floor. You can take the support of a wall to prevent falling down and hitting your back. You can also ask someone to hold your legs for a few minutes to ensure you do not fall.
Vajrasana
Dr Singh said that poor gut health can contribute to hair woes. Therefore, performing Vajrasana every day can help you bid adieu to your stomach problems, which in the long term can prevent hair fall.
You have to sit on your knees and look straight ahead. Slowly take your hands at the back and join them like you do ‘Namaste’. Hold the pose for a few seconds before relaxing.
Uttanasana
The yoga expert said that the Uttanasana pose stretches all the muscles in the body and increases oxygen levels as well. It improves the circulation of blood and boosts hair growth. You should stand straight, lift your arms, and bend forward while trying to touch your feet with your fingers. If you cannot touch your feet or the floor, try to hug your knees. You should avoid practising this pose if you suffer from injuries to your knees, ankles, and lower back.

Apanasana
Dr Singh said that Apanasana helps flush out toxins and purify the body. It promotes the growth of hair by stimulating hair follicles. It is also an effective pose for people with back pain to try and experience relief.
First, you should lie down on your back. Pull both of your knees to your chest and hold the position. You can also pull one leg and keep the other straight. You will have to keep switching between the legs.

Disclaimer: Yoga alone cannot help with hair fall. You have to maintain a healthy diet, use natural hair care products, and limit styling them using heating tools. Yoga is also not a quick fix. It will take time to show results. If you have any underlying condition or are recovering from an injury, you should consult your doctor before trying any of the above poses.
