The United Nations (UN) has declared December 21 as the World Meditation Day. The described meditation as "an ancient practice that involves focusing one’s attention on the present moment." It trains your mind and helps you achieve a certain calm and control over your emotions. Since meditation is a practice, when started at a very young age, it can reap ample benefits for a person in the long run. In that light, it is imperative to introduce the habit to children when they are around 5-6 years old. Mr. Saurabh Bothra, CEO of Habuild, guides on how to inculcate the habit in kids from an early age.
Reasons Why Meditation Should Be Introduced To Kids
"The most recognized definition of meditation generally describes it as a practice where an individual uses techniques such as mindfulness, focused attention, or concentrated thought to train the mind and achieve a state of mental clarity, emotional calmness, and physical relaxation," describes the UN in its press release about World Meditation Day.
Mr. Bothra points out that given this development, "the spotlight on mindfulness and mental well-being has never been brighter," while adding that not only adults, butkids need them as much.
"We often overlook the stress kids face. Academic pressure, hours of screen time, and tightly packed schedules leave little room for quiet moments. Meditation can help reduce these pressures. Think of it as planting seeds of resilience that grow with them over time," he highlights.
4 Amazing Benefits of Meditation for Kids
Mr. Bothra says that in comparison to adults, the absorption power of kids is way more. "Their minds and bodies are like sponges fully ready to absorb new habits that will stick for life. During these peak years, meditation is one habit that every parent should introduce to their children. With the rise of technology and AI, it’s more important than ever to raise thoughtful, calm, and conscious kids," he adds.
He lists four amazing benefits of meditation in children:
1) Improved Focus and Attention
Even short meditation sessions can help kids concentrate better, making studies or tasks easier.
2) Emotional Balance
Meditation helps kids understand and manage their emotions. This skill stays with them for life.
3) Better Sleep
A simple bedtime meditation routine can help kids relax and sleep peacefully, smoother mornings guaranteed!
4) Healthy Mindset
Starting young builds confidence and helps kids naturally adopt a healthy lifestyle as part of their identity.
6 Ways You Can Make Meditation A Habit For Your Child
According to Mr. Bothra, the following 6 tips can help any parent introduce meditation to a child's life in a practical manner:
1) Start Small
Begin with 2-3 minutes daily and gradually increase the duration.
2) Make It Fun
Use themes, like imagining floating on a cloud, to spark interest.
3) Be Consistent
Choose a regular time before bed or after school to build a solid routine.
4) Lead by Example
Meditate with your kids to show its importance.
5) Create a Cozy Space

"As we mark World Meditation Day, let’s remember a mindful child today will become a compassionate and resilient leader tomorrow. This could be your gift that lasts them a lifetime," wraps up Mr. Bothra.
