Among the many health problems our shift to sedentary lifestyles has brought in is constipation. Not consuming a fibre-rich diet, lack of regular exercise, inadequate water intake throughout the day, and being on certain medications are some common causes of constipation. Psychological factors like anxiety, and stress also affect our bowel movements negatively and lead to constipation.
While a lot of us rely on medications to treat constipation, not all of us like taking that route, and for many, medicines just don’t work. In such cases, we depend on natural, home remedies to treat constipation. Castor oil is often linked to constipation and it is believed that making it a part of our diet can help treat constipation. However, to make the best use of this natural remedy, it is important to follow it the right way.
Our health expert, Dr. Bhushan Bhole, Senior Consultant of Liver Transplant and GI Surgery at PSRI Hospital speaking of using castor oil as a remedy for constipation shared that it is a budget-friendly, effective remedy for the health problem. He added that castor oil, prepared using crushed castor beans, has laxative properties that help treat constipation.
The right way of consuming castor oil is by mixing it with water or milk. This helps improve the frequency of bowel movements and improves digestion. Castor oil works as a stimulant, promoting bowel movements because of the ricinoleic acid present in it.
Take one teaspoon of castor oil and mix it with a glass of warm water. Drink this twice a day for best results, two hours after your meal. (Castor oil for skin and hair)

Castor oil helps in bowel movements, and relieves constipation but it might not work for everyone. Those suffering from any health condition or undergoing medications, children below 12 years of age, and pregnant women should completely avoid consuming castor oil for constipation.
The expert suggested making lifestyle modifications, and following a healthy diet to keep constipation at bay. "Add high fibre foods like vegetables, beans, fruits, and whole grains to your daily diet. Drink a lot of fluids and indulge in physical activity every day for regular bowel movements," the expert concluded.
