Have you been trying remedies to make your teeth white? While most people prefer pearl white teeth, the dentin layer beneath the enamel is naturally yellow. Hence, most of us have non-white teeth because the yellow reflects a bit.

Many people use baking soda, salt, orange peels, lemon and banana peels among other products to achieve white teeth. However, Dr Dixa Bhavsar Savaliya, an Ayurvedic expert, shared a few natural remedies on her Instagram page to help you achieve white teeth with minimal effort.

Dr Savaliya said, “There are two rules you need to stick with - one is to practise patience because it will not happen overnight, and the second is to follow the tips consistently.”

Acacia Or Neem Twigs

In Ayurveda, acacia (babul) and neem twigs are mentioned as good options for brushing teeth. Dr Savaliya said the two have antimicrobial properties. If you chew them, they will release anti-bacterial agents into your mouth that help to take care of your oral health.

Method

  • Pick a twig which is as thick as your little finger.
  • Chew one corner of it until it starts looking like a brush. You should keep spitting saliva in the basin while chewing.
  • Once the corner is soft, brush the gums and all the teeth with that end.
  • Spit the twig’s fibre after you are done and gargle with normal water.

Brush Twice A Day

We have all read in our books that it is necessary to brush at least twice a day to ensure good oral health. Dr Savaliya also has a similar tip for you. She said, “It is crucial to brush post meals, especially after eating sticky food items like chocolates.”

She added that it is not possible to brush after every meal or 4-5 times a day, a person must brush in the morning and before going to sleep.

Herbal Mouth Rinse

A decoction of liquorice (yashtimadhu) (Liquorice Root Remedies) or triphala serves as an excellent mouth rinser, said Dr Savaliya. Along with maintaining oral hygiene, the practice also alleviates mouth ulcers.

Method

  • Boil tripahala or liquorice in water until the amount is reduced to half.
  • Allow the extracted mix to cool down.
  • Rinse your mouth with a lukewarm solution.

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling refers to swishing oil in the mouth. It helps to remove germs from teeth and gums. It also helps to alleviate ulcers and exercises the muscles of the mouth. It leads to the strengthening and toning of muscles.

Method

  • You can use coconut oil, mustard oil or sesame oil for the process. Swish some amount of oil throughout the mouth for 15-20 minutes.
  • Spit the oil once you are done.

Tongue Scraping

Tongue scraping is the best way to clean the oral cavity and flush out toxins that can lead to the growth of bacteria, which can cause the formation of plaque.
