Arthritis, a condition often associated with ageing, is becoming increasingly common in younger adults, especially those aged 20–27. We spoke to Dr Girish L. Bhalerao, Super Specialty Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Wockhardt Hospital Mira Road, who revealed the reasons behind this alarming trend and offered practical tips for prevention. Here’s what you need to know to safeguard your joint health.
The rise in arthritis among young adults can be attributed to several lifestyle and environmental factors. “Lack of exercise, prolonged typing or gaming, and poor dietary choices are major contributors,” explains Dr. Bhalerao. These habits can lead to joint stiffness and degeneration over time.
Weight gain and obesity further compound the problem by exerting undue pressure on the joints, particularly the knees. “Excess weight accelerates wear and tear in the joints, leading to early onset arthritis,” warns Dr. Bhalerao.
Another significant factor is the deficiency of essential nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids and calcium, which are critical for joint and bone health. Genetic predispositions and injuries also play a role in raising arthritis risk among younger individuals.
Dr. Bhalerao emphasises that arthritis is not just a condition of old age. “It’s important for young adults to prioritise their joint health through physical activity, healthy eating, and ergonomic practices,” he says.
To combat the increasing prevalence of arthritis, Dr. Bhalerao recommends adopting the following preventative measures:
“Excess body weight puts additional strain on joints, especially the knees,” says Dr. Bhalerao. By maintaining an optimal weight, you can significantly reduce the stress on your joints and lower your risk of arthritis.
While staying active is essential, high-impact exercises can damage the joints. “Low-impact activities like swimming, cycling, and yoga are excellent choices,” advises Dr. Bhalerao. These activities strengthen the muscles surrounding the joints without causing inflammation or pain.
A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, and vitamins D and C is crucial for maintaining joint health. Dr Bhalerao suggests incorporating foods like fish, nuts, leafy greens, and dairy products into your diet to support strong bones and healthy joints.
Ergonomics plays a vital role in joint health, whether you’re working at a desk or exercising. “Maintain proper posture and alignment during daily activities to avoid unnecessary joint strain,” says Dr. Bhalerao. Invest in supportive seating and ensure correct body mechanics in your routine.

“Be mindful of activities that place repetitive stress on the joints,” cautions Dr. Bhalerao. Rest and modify your routine if you experience joint discomfort. Early intervention can prevent further damage and keep your joints healthy.
