The fourth season of this show revolves around the new villain, Vecna. We get to know more about Vecna’s past and his identity as Henry Creel (Subject 001). He was banished to the Upside Down by Eleven in 1979, becoming the Mind Flayer's general. Vecna physically tortures and kills trauma-affected teens, like Max, to open four large gates or rifts between the dimensions. Eleven regains her powers to fight Vecna in the psychic realm. The Hawkins group attacks his physical body in the Upside Down but doesn't manage to kill him, only severely hurt him. We get to see Hopper fighting Demogorgons in Russia. Max is temporarily killed by Vecna, completing the fourth gate. Max’s death causes a massive rupture that splits Hawkins, but Eleven revives Max, leaving her in a comatose state. Vecna is wounded but still alive. The Hawkins gang awaits one epic battle to kill Vecna, but for now, they watch the Upside Down bleed into the real world.
