According to reports, Mukesh Dhirubai Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, has signed a non-binding agreement with Walt Disney Co., also referred to as Disney. Therefore, the OTT market is experiencing a little chaos.
Reportedly, Disney + Hotstar and JioCinema are also a part of the deal. This mega-merger between the OTT platforms would bring two rivals, currently dominating the Indian market, together.

Reportedly, the merger will be finalised in February 2024. It is expected that Reliance Industries will heavily benefit from this merger and also take control of the major chunk in the ratio of 51:49.
If this deal is finalised, the new platform would be the biggest in India entertaining and catering to regional audiences. A small example of it is when HBO and Disney + Hotstar ended their deal, JioCinema shook hands with it and is currently promoting the most sought-after series produced by the platform, including ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘Game of Thrones’.
What Will The Mega-Merger Of JioCinema And Disney + Hotstar Offer?
JioCinema and Disney + Hotstar have been entertaining Indian audiences for quite some time. The former OTT platform is currently promoting new films and all that it has to offer, while the latter one is already ruling the entertainment world by offering regional content to its subscribers.
During the Indian Premier League (IPL) bidding, the two platforms were competing for the rights. If they merge, their bidding war will end and the cricket fans will no longer be confused about where to watch international tournaments and IPL matches.
Jio-Disney will reportedly become the biggest entertainment platform in India with subscribers getting the option to pick from thousands of options. From football and cricket to WB and HBO content, there is no dearth of what this one platform will have in its huge library. Reportedly, this merger will help Hotstar to rise above the losses that the platform has incurred in the past year.

Disney + Hotstar currently charges ₹1499 per annum, and JioCinema is priced at ₹999 for an annual subscription. The two have infinite libraries for their subscribers. The latter platform is currently garnering viewership by showcasing Bigg Boss 17 and Temptation Island for free of cost.
If the two OTT platforms merge, it is highly likely that the price of the new platform will initially be high or around the current price charged by Disney + Hotstar. However, considering JioCinema is catering to Indian audiences and understands their demand and expectations, the price can even be lower. The air on the subject will clear after the OTT platforms go through the merger.
