Emma Cooper who is the director of Netflix’s ‘Depp v. Heard’ had full knowledge of the fact that revisiting the trial between the famous Hollywood couple Johnny Depp and Amber Heard for her latest project would be subject to a lot of commentary by fans and netizens.
After all, the six week long defamation case between one of the most famous celebrities on the planet Earth and his upcoming star ex-wife was televised live with viewers around the globe gorging on the explosive testimony which documented both the actors accusing each other of domestic violence and abuse.
Towards the end, the jury voted in favour of Depp with Heard ordered to pay him $10 million in damages. This ultimately ended their long drawn legal battle for a sum of $1 million.
Taking the fact that this matter involved two very high-profile celebrities, Cooper was not surprised that Team Johnny and Team Amber commenters had an issue with the mere existence of this documentary series.
Cooper was quoted saying, “You know, it’s a balanced level of hate.” She further added with a laugh, “I pride myself that it tends to be very 50/50,” when referring to fans and detractors of both celebrities Depp and Heard.
The documentary series that has began streaming on the OTT platform starting August 16, 2023, Cooper revealed that the project was born from her own interest as a spectator in what happened in the courtroom and on social media platforms.
In this regard Emma Cooper said, “I found myself compulsively watching the live feed, and then discussing it with my friends, and looking at what everybody was saying on social. And I wondered what that said about me that I was so interested in what felt like a rather sad open event of a private relationship.

Cooper, who has also directed ‘The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes’ and ‘The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann,’ both for Netflix further added, “the more I looked into it, I felt like we were in a cultural and social phenomenon. As a documentary maker, I felt there was an opportunity for me to reflect how I was feeling while I was watching it, and I felt that it was a real moment in time.” She continues saying, “My intention, right from the start, was to make a cogent and interesting reflection of what happened without using interviews or experts.”
