If you're planning a train journey with family or solo, one of the main decisions you'll need to make is which class to choose. Among the most popular choices are 3E (Third Economy Class) and 3AC (Third AC Class), both of which are part of the sleeper classes but have distinct features, amenities, and price points. But what exactly sets them apart? Understanding these differences can help you choose the right class for your next trip:
What Is 3E (Third Economy Class)?
Introduced as a more affordable option for passengers, 3E is a relatively recent addition to the Indian Railways network. It is often referred to as Third Economy Class and is designed to offer a no-frills travel experience for budget-conscious travelers. Here's what you can expect from 3E coaches:
1. Seating Arrangement
Third AC Economy has 9 berths per compartment, including an extra side middle berth. “In 3A class there are 6 berths and 2 side berths in each compartment, but in 3E class there are 3 side berths making it a total of 9 berths per compartment”, as per the Train Man report. This makes the 3E class more of a seated-only accommodation, ideal for short to medium-distance travel where you don’t need a bed for overnight journeys.
2. Air Conditioning
3E is an air-conditioned class but the level of air-conditioning is generally more basic compared to 3AC. The interiors of 3E coaches are equipped with air conditioning, but it is not as cold or plush as the higher-class compartments.
3. Cost-Effective
The most significant advantage of 3E is its affordability. It is considerably cheaper than 3AC, making it ideal for passengers who are looking for a budget option but still prefer some level of comfort over a non-AC coach. According to the Government of India, Ministry of Railways, Railway Board notice, “The base fare for 3AC Economy coach shall be 2.4 times of the base fare of the existing Sleeper class coach of Mail/ Express trains.”
4. Basic Amenities
3E comes with basic amenities such as clean linens, fans, and overhead storage. The overall ambiance in a 3E coach is functional, without any major luxury touches.
What Makes 3AC (Third AC Class) Different?
3AC (Third Air-Conditioned Class) is one of the most popular and widely chosen classes for long-distance travel in India. It offers greater comfort, privacy, and convenience compared to 3E.

Third AC has 6 berths and 2 side berths per compartment. “It has 3 side berths, making it a total of 9 berths per compartment. It has an additional berth between the side upper and side lower”, as per Zee Business report. The coaches are divided into compartments with berths for passengers to sleep each berth provided with clean bedding, including sheets, blankets, and pillows.
2. Better Comfort
3AC provides more comfortable seating and privacy compared to 3E. The compartments in 3AC offer a sense of separation from other passengers, and are fully air-conditioned making the passenger’s journey cool and pleasant, as per redBus.
3. Enhanced Amenities
Passengers traveling in 3AC are provided with higher-quality amenities. These include bedrolls, pillows, water bottles, and occasionally, refreshments. The cleanliness and hygiene levels are generally better in 3AC than in 3E, making it a preferred choice for longer journeys.
4. Price Change
As expected, 3AC is priced higher than 3E. However, it is still more affordable than the higher classes, such as 2AC or 1AC, which makes it a good middle ground for those who want a more comfortable, air-conditioned experience without breaking the bank. Ticket fare of 3 AC (Third AC Class) class is comparatively higher than third AC and it entirely depends upon the distance that the traveller is planning to cover.

Which Should You Choose?
If you're looking for the most economical option and are travelling on a short to medium-distance journey, 3E is a great choice. It offers basic air-conditioning and comfortable seating at a price point that won’t strain your budget.
On the other hand, if you’re travelling for a long distance or prefer more comfort and privacy, 3AC would be a better option. While it is more expensive than 3E, it surely provides more space and better amenities for overnight journeys.
