Women's Premier League

The much-awaited Women’s Premier League (WPL) Auction 2025 has successfully concluded, with five franchises making strategic additions to their squads for the upcoming season. The auction, held in Bengaluru on December 15, 2024, saw teams filling in key gaps, despite limited budget flexibility. With only 19 players available for selection and many teams operating on tight budgets, the auction didn’t witness too many major shake-ups. However, several noteworthy signings have been made, as franchises look to strengthen their teams ahead of the new season.

The auction was marked by some substantial bids, with Gujarat Giants making a strong push to strengthen their squad. One of the biggest signings was Deandra Dottin from the West Indies, who was picked up by Gujarat Giants for ₹1.70 crore, well above her base price of ₹50 lakh.

Another significant move was UP Warriorz securing the services of the talented all-rounder Alana King for ₹30 lakh, reinforcing their squad. Additionally, Mumbai Indians added to their ranks with the purchase of Nadine de Klerk from South Africa for ₹30 lakh, while they also invested in Indian players such as G Kamalini and Sanskriti Gupta for ₹1.60 crore and ₹10 lakh, respectively.

On the flip side, several players failed to find buyers at the auction. High-profile names such as Heather Knight (England), Poonam Yadav (India), and Sarah Glenn (England) remained unsold, which has left some observers surprised given their international experience.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) secured key players, including Prema Rawat and Raghvi Bist, both from India, who were picked for ₹1.20 crore and ₹10 lakh, respectively. RCB, who are coming off a strong performance in the previous season, will be looking to continue their success by adding depth to their squad.

Delhi Capitals, though restricted by a tight purse, managed to bring in Nandini Kashyap and Niki Prasad for ₹10 lakh each, while Gujarat Giants also picked up Prakakshika Naik, another Indian player, for ₹10 lakh. These signings suggest that some franchises have focused on adding depth and potential rather than going after big-ticket stars.
